Winchester M1895 Flatside, Is it safe?
Does anybody have any information as to the reason that almost immediately after starting production, Winchester made major design changes in the Model 1895? All the references I have read discuss what the differences are but not the reasons why. I can only guess that there must have been major safety concerns with the original flatside design.

Hello glabray...
Nope, not related to any safety issues what-so-ever. Winchester was simply just trying to shave a few ounces of weight off the rifle in that area to get the rifle to balance better (with the box magazine, all of the weight was at the rear end of the rifle).

Bert is exactly correct. See the section on the Model 1895 in George Madis' book 'The Winchester Book'. 0
