what is the purpose of choke tube for shotgun?

i mean...can the shotgun without choke tube shoot the buckshot or whatever the shot shells?

    I don't mean to ask questions that ,to some I'm sure, make me look ignorant but I know nothing about Choke Tubes so if I buy the 870 Express Super Magnum Combo 12 3.5, what tubes do I need to buy for all my needs listed in my first post (that is now locked?) thanks for your time

    If the barrel is set up for choke tubes, it MUST be used with choke tubes. OK, "must" may be a little strong, let's just say that not using the tube will lower the gun's value to near zero $.

    The purpose is to allow you to change the amount of constriction (choke) at the end of the barrel. The amount of constriction affcts how the shot patterns (zero constriction (cylinder bore) gives the most "open" patterns, while about .040 constriction (full choke) gives the tightest).
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    shotguns are designed to scatter lead pellets. how fast or slow you scatter them from the end of the gun requires choking. when you shoot buck shot, you want it to go far and stay together so more pellets hit the target, so you choke it a little. (you modify the choke.) if you want to hit birds flying right over you, you want the pellets to scatter faster and wider for better chance of hitting them as they swirve all over the place. for this reason you dont retrict the pellets, you let them come out and fly everywhere as soon as they can. (this is called cylinder or an open choke.) in the old days, they perminently built the choke into the bore of a barrel. today, you can swap them out by changing 'chokes.' the bbl is threaded to accept these chokes. its a very hard process. if you shoot a barrel without the choke in the muzzle, the threads will be ruined. even worse, you stand the chance of blowing the barrel up if something gets caught in it. hope i helped.

    i have mossberg 88 with cylinder bore...

    so better to use choke tube?

    Either the barrel(s) has choke tube(s) in it or is does not. If not it can possibly be added on by a compentant gunsmith. The end of the barrel will have an inner circle of metal with 2 or 4 slots in it. A quarter will fit into these slots, allowing the removeal of the choke tube sleeve (they are threaded into the barrel).

    YOur mossberg 88, does it hold 5 shells in the tube, or 7. if 7 you are SOL, but if it is a 5 shot gun, it will take any barrel for a regular mossberg 500. If you purchased the gun for hame protection, close range shoot at bird or vermin, or shooting slugs, you have the right barrel. If you want to shoot at a turkey ar 50 yards, good luck.

    cyl choke is for birds up to 20/25 yards. good for buck shot too. 30 yards +/-. it appears you have a fixed choke barrel. correct? where did you read you had a cyl choke? on the choke or on the side of the barrel?

    i read the cylinder bore on the side of barrel, and there is no thread inside the barrel. so i figured mine don't need a choke tube.


    but its okay for buckshot ammo?

    It's ok for any factory ammo that does not exceed the chamber length marked on the barrel. Patterns will be wider with the choke you have, so the effective range will be shorter.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
