9mm Ammo
i recently purchased a S & W Sigma series SW9VE. i am not very familiar with handguns, and would appreciate any info on what is the best 9mm ammo maker and what is the best load to use for basic shooting. anyone out there able to share some knowledge?

A deceptively difficult question, staind460! The decision which ammo to use requires as much thought and experimentation as selecting the best handgun. Some may be right for the job at hand, while all may work to some extent. For self-defense you'll no doubt want a jacketed hollowpoint round (JHP), while ammo with a full metal jacket (FMJ) will serve well for target practice. As for JHP, some of the more popular is Federal Hydra-Shok, Winchester SXT, Remington Golden Saber, and PMC Starfire. In the FMJ dept. there is Federal American Eagle (this is what I use for target and plinking), Remington UMC, and Winchester USA. These can all be purchased at reasonable prices at your various "Mart" stores. You'll probably find that among the types and brands I've mentioned, your pistol will prefer one brand over the others and give slightly better performance (accuracy) with it. You'll have to experiment to find out. The good thing is this means that you will have to shoot a lot; and that's fun! 0 -
I agree with the above statement. I really like any premium handgun load from Winchester for self-defense loads. I have shot hundreds of rounds of CCI Blazer ammo for general plinking and target shooting. That's the great thing about the 9mm Luger cartridge, lots of different loads to choose from and it's reasonably priced. You can get a case (1,000 rounds) of the Blazer 115 grn. FMJ from Natchez Shooters Supply for $90. The regular price per box of 50 is $4.92, but the case price per box is $4.59.

I don't know if the "special" is still on. White box winchester fmj is available at wally world for about 10 bucks/100 rounds. For defense either the winchester or the hornady gold dot. 0 -
I have ran 1000's of rounds of Sellier & Bellot ammo through my handguns. Not the cheapest, but I have never had a problem. They have been around since 1825.

For self defense I like Federal's 135gr JHP,it takes up a big gap in the effectiveness of the 9MM.

I just saw a 250 round bulk box (all in one bag) of Speer JHP 40 S&W.
It was $45.00. I've seen this ammo @ $12 for a 20 count box!
Buying in this discounted way for premium ammo brings the price close to what I pay for my Federal AE FMJ.
I never knew you could order this way... but I called back, and they are holding the box for me.
Buy a 50 count box of three or four kinds. After doing this a few times, you'll start to notice distinctions. Like one type being particularly DIRTY in your gun, while others say they notice nothing untoward in their firearm (of different manufacturer).
