Calling Marlin 22 rifle repair experts?

My father has a Marlin 22 that he bought when he was about 14 (about 1954). It's been a great accurate plinker and a real treat to shoot. About 6 years ago it started acting up and then the cocking lever broke. We then sent it to a smith who did a really shoddy job of trying to repair it. It's never been the same, so now it just sits in the gun case on display. My dad was so dissapointed that I went out and got him a brand new Ruger 10/22. He likes the Ruger, but he's still partial to the Marlin and wishes we could find an expert to recondition the rifle. If possible, I'd love to surprise him this Christmas with the rifle being repaired properly.

I contacted Marlin directly but I can't get a human being on the phone to answer my additional questions or to give me a quote on reconditioning the rifle. I also checked on their web site. They say to ship the gun UPS and include a note of what you would like repaired. I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing that, and I'm also not sure what all needs repaired. Does anyone out there have any insight on this or ideas of what I should do?

    If I were you, I'd Box it up and ship it to Marlin....At least you know it will be right when it comes back....Its gotta cost less then a Hundred Dollars.....and if it means this much to you...Hang the Expence...!....

    I'm sure I'll follow fergusonmorse392 reccomendations, I guess I was just wondering if you experts thought that was the best thing to do.

    I don't have to worry about any FFL stuff when I ship it do I? Just want to make sure I use the correct protocal. Marlin says to ship UPS, but I just want to make sure I'm not breaking any laws considering all the uneasiness after 9/11.

    Your not selling it so no you do not have to use an FFL dealer to ship it, like the good Captain said box it up and send it to Marlin.

    Fellas, the Marlin I have is a Model 88-22 long rifle. It's got a but stock tube loading system. It's a real sweet "old jewel".

    I actuall took the captians advice and just sent her out to Marlin for repairs. I just hope that as old as it is that they can still repair it. Any of you experts have any insight on this model?

    I just recieved my Marlin 88-22 back unrepaired from Marlin Firearms. The returned paperwork stated "sorry, but we do not have parts to repair rifle".

    Is there anyone out there than can assist me with repair or parts on this rifle now that Marlin cannot provide assistance?

    Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    Most marlin rimfires are pretty simple to fix, just find the pieces that are worn or broke, and swap the out for new ones. You might check numrich gun parts for replacements.
