WANTED Winchester.22 Model 06 Stock
I'm looking for a Winchester.22 Model 06 Stock and forearm? And info on blueing the barrel? I have done blueing before, it looks bad!! Please help. Thanks[:D]

I don't know any company now making replacement 1906 stocks. Fajen and Bishop used to. There are quite a few 1890 and model 62 stocks show up on e-barf, and if you aren't particular about originality you would be better off with them. Finding an original gumwood 1906 stock is very difficult. I think there are some companys listing replacements in Gunlist.
I haven't tried it but everyone here seems satisfied with Blue Wonder,s blueing. Find it here by searching.

Most of the Model 1906s had walnut stocks versus the gumwood, but both were used (1906s made in and around WW I are the ones most often encountered with gumwood stocks). The bluing methods used by Winchester changed at least twice during the production run of the MOdel 1906... what vintage is yours?

The vintage can be determined from the serial number. Model 1906/06s were in regular production from 1906 - 1932 (parts clean-up rifles were made up to about 1942). Gumwood is lighter in color than walnut, softer (less dense), and has absolutely no grain pattern.

The Winchester Model 1906 had a buttstock and slidehandle distinctly it's own. Perhaps the most noticeable difference was Winchester's use of gumwood instead of American black walnut. Because the company was attemting to offer a lower priced version of the Model 90, the gumwood stock used on th Model 06 was designed to keep the cost down. Gumwood had several advantages other than cost over walnut. It was lightweight and easy to work with because of it's soft texture. But this softness was also a disadvantage because the wood was not nearly as durable as walnut.Woodworkers often refer to gumwood as Satin Walnut because it could be finished to look very similar to walnut.
The Model 06 will be seen with american black walnut stocks occasionally. The exact number of rifles stocked with walnut is not known, but the number was relatively small, despite the fact that Winchester advertised the Model 06 as available with walnut stocks in the 1931 through 1934 catalogs. It must be stated that Winchester did such a suberb job of finishing these gumwood stocks that many collectors confuse them with walnut. The softness of the wood is the tell-tale sign of gumwood.
This was copied from Ned Schwings book on 1890 and 1906 slide action rifles.
You will sometimes see a 1906 stocked with walnut, but it is usually reject sapwood from other Winchester rifles. Most are originally gumwood.

Thank You for the info on my .22. The serial number is 683365, under the number is a letter B. From the serial number can you tell me the production date? I found a stock ans forarm for the modle 06, the stock is 85.00, and the forarm is 40.00. Is that a good price? I seen the same rilfe on this site from 400.00 to 775.00. Madis' serial number listing indicates D.O.M. would have been mid 1929 (but like many things he wrote, it could be off by a few years).
I have to disagree with Ned Swing (and indirectly wundudnee) about the type of wood predominately used by Winchester for the Model 1906. I base this assertion on personal observation of several hundred of them over many years, and on the information taken directly from several original Winchester catalogs (I have an original 1907, 1911, 1913, 1916, 1920, and 1925 catalog in my collection).
When the Model 1906 was first introduced, it did have a different style slide handle and buttstock, however, by the time your rifle was made, the Model 06 was using the exact same grooved slide handle as the Model 90 (listed in the catalogs with the identical part number). Many of the parts for the Model 90 and 06 are fully interchangeable.
As to your question about the price tag on those replacement stocks you found for your rifle, they seem quite reasonable to me (especially if those are original stocks vs. repros).
