H & R pistol help
I am fixing a family members H and R .22 7 shot pistol and I am having trouble finding out which model it is so I can order parts. It says "H & R 22 Special" on the left side of the barrel. I know it is a 22 long rifle. There is no other model info anywhere on it. I see nothing at gunpartscorp. that matches it. At least where I can get a picture to look at. It has a 6 inch barrel, break-top with hammer and solid unventilated "rib" on top of the barrel. Anyone able to help? I appreciate it!

The H&R 22 Special DA is a 9 shot not 7.
Came chambered 22 LR and 22 Mag (22WMR)
If the cylinder is recessed then it's a latger model for "High Speed" Ammo

I count only 7 holes in the cylinder. It is not recessed and ejects with the "star" when you break it open. It physically looks very similar to a 999 and such, but is 7 shot. 0 -
YOUR BEST BET IS TO NAIL THIS TO THE WALL FOR A CONVERSATION PIECE. 0 -

the h&r 22 special was introduced in 1925 and discontinued in 1941.
if your does not have the safety rim cylinder it was manufactured before 1932. the original chambering was 9 rounds of 22 rimfire (short, long & long rifle)the 7 shot 22 winchester rim fire (THIS IS NOT THE 22 MAGNUM WE KNOW TODAY) came along later. i think your will find that the 22 long rifle cartridge fits extremely loose in the cylinder. Although never cataloged there is reason to believe some 22 long rifles may have been manufactured in 7 shot versions. the marking 22 special is on the left side of the barrel and the caliber marking is on the right side. if this marking is just 22 rimfire then it is chambered for the 22 WRF, but if it is marked 22 long rifle that would confirm some 7 shots were manufactured. (also check to see if there are any markings on the cylinder)
the 22 special is not as bad as mike whiskey would make them out to be but when there is internal wear of the frame (double action mechansim parts were made of harder steel than the frame was) they are very difficult to make work properly. if you do get it working properly never fire modern high velocity ammo in it stay with standard velocity.

Thanks B G! That was most helpful. I will have to agree with Mike W. in that it should not be trusted a whole lot. But having a working sentimental gun is still better somehow than a broken one. We will heed the warning. It does say "22 Long Rifle CTG." on the right side of the barrel though. I'm not sure yet what is the problem but the trigger/hammer seem to be locked up. The big question is; what other H&R if any might have similar parts to cross to this one? 0 -
I got around to taking it apart and it was just put together wrong. The ejector spring is missing however. Other than that it functions correctly. Could use that spring, some grips and maybe a new hammer. Any ideas? Thanks. PL 0 -

try numrich arms (e-gunparts.com) the purchased most of h&r's revolver parts in 1986/87. after company filed for bankruptcy. the internal parts except for the rimfire hammer are the same as the late production auto-ejecting model. the hammer would be the same as an early model 999 sportsman
