Winchester boxes

I've was noticing a Winchester box listed on ebay, appears old, circa 1940 or so. As I mention it, the price is quite high at $158. The box is for a model 68 Winchester, my question is did all Winchester rifles come in boxes with artists illus. back then, for how many years, or just the .22 models?

Seems like the boxes I remember seeing were just plain lettering, those from the 1950's-60's.

  Rockford; From what I've seen, in shotguns, the old md 37 single shot and the Md 24 double also had boxes like you mentioned. These guns came out in 1937 and 1939 respecively. The price you mentioned, is reasonable for those looking for the box to go with their gun. A month or so, I saw a Md 42 prewar box go for almost $400. If you have the box for a collectable Winchester firearm it can add almost 50% to the value of the gun. Yes the serial number on the boxes that had them can be changed so you can't tell. The paper work that goes with the box and gun can be expensive too. From what I've seen these boxes appeared in the mid 30's, and were used until the supply was exhausted in 42/43 time frame depending on the model of the gun. Not all Models came with boxes like this.
