Shorting a Turkish Mauser barrel?

I'm looking at getting an 8mm Turkish Mauser but I don't like the barrel length all 29 inches of it. I would like to take some off 6 to 7 inches, I not going to be shooting more than 200 yds. So how do you think this rifle would shoot with a short barrel I'm not looking for a target rifle just something to toss in the truck. Thanks for the help.

    Only One other way to find out....Grab your Hacksaw and have at it!..Deffinately gonna improve the appearance......

    Nothing to lose, just make sure your cut is exactly 90 degrees, and recrown.

    Don't go using a hacksaw on your barrel---these guys are just pulling your leg. Take the barrel and receiver to a machine shop and have them do it on a lathe, and after they have it cut down have them make an 11 degree light crowning cut from the inner edge of the muzzle to about halfway out. Finish with 320 grit wet/dry body-paper, making sure to remove any burrs from the lip of the muzzle just inside the barrel.

    It isn't worth paying someone $100 to shorten a $50 rifle. I agree, use a hacksaw, make certain it is straight, and cut. If you end up off square, you can straigten it out with a file. The crown can be accomplished with a mounted round profile stone in an electric drill to create a dished end in the barrel. I did it on a VZ-24 and it worked well until I decided I needed another .308.

    Richbug is right. You can keep it cheap and simple and it will do all you want it to do. Precision and theory are fine for fine guns and may look better but are not proven to shoot any better than a carefully done home shop job.

    How deep do I go with the round profile stone?

    Just deep enough to keep protect the rifleing if you bump into something. I used a 1/4" carriage bolt head for a check guage to make sure I was keeping it even. I think a total depth of 1/8" would be a good starting place. If it doesn't work the way you think it should, cut it off and try again. you have 13" of extra barrel to work with (29"-16" minimum legal length). In theory a perfectly squared off crown is ideal, until you hit it with something.

    Like already stated a hack saw sould do fine. Just make sure that the cut is straight, and that there are no burs on the rifling. Also if your going to cut it, I'd take it down to 18". It's going to be just as good with taking a few inches off. They aren't tack drivers, and you'll still be good to 200 yards for most stuff.
