winchester 1866 nickel

My Grandfather owns a winchester 1866 SRC, that was purchased by his father. I have found some on line, but none like this one. It is not the yellowboy, it's more like a nickel finish with round barrel. It's in fairly good shape. The whole s/n is not visable only 1004 is showing. Are other 1866's around like this one? About how much would this be worth?

    Your Winchester Model 1866 carbine most likely has a serial number 1004XX and would have been made in 1872. Remove the butt stock from the receiver and look in the inlet for the top tang,many times the full serial number will be found there. According to 'The Winchester Book' by George Madis,gold silver and nickel plateing was offered from the introduction of the Model 1866 until the end of production. There were fewer plated Model 1866's produced then engraved guns. As to value,condition is everything,but, a plated Model 1866 is worth at lest in the high four figures. Without a better description and some photos that is the best that I can do.

    In addition to what Iroquios Scout has stated, the serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel under the forestock, and on the inside toe of the buttplate. I also believe that the serial number will be 1004xx, and if that is the case, you will not be able to letter it with the Cody Firearms Museum (records for the Model 1866 start at serial number 125,001).

    Without an expert inspection/appraisal, it will be nearly impossible to determine if the nickel plating is factory original, and unfortunately, many of them were plated after they left the factory. Value is tough to estimate without knowing considerably more about your grandfather's SRC.
