Shooting Corrosive Ammunition Question

Is there any special way to clean a handgun after shooting corrosive ammuntion? The majority of Eastern European surplus ammo seems to be corrosive - even though its not marked as such. How should I clean the weapon after shooting this ammo?

    I don't think any SPECIAL cleaning-agents need be used; just use your Hoppes or whatever you prefer, but simply do it ASAP after shooting.

    Ammonia. Spray windex of any other type cleaning liquid with ammonia through the barrel and don't be conservitive. Then clean normally.

    The nice thing about a handgun is that it will fit in the kitchen sink. I take the whole slide, barrel and rest of the top end and drop it in some really hot, soapy, water. Run a brush through a couple of times then clean as usual.

    Soap and water will clean it up. Usw a hairdryer to dry hard areas. Lightly oil and you are good to go.

    All this soap-and-hot-water/ammonia advice---Isn't that for cleaning BLACKPOWDER firearms, guys? I've heard time and again that that's what you use to clean blackpowder residue out of a gun; but the problem here is one of corrosive (typically mercuric) salts from the type of primer used. Or is it useful for BOTH issues?

    I use the old military bore cleaner than was designed to clean corrosive residue. I pick it up a gunshows. I usually use it outside because of the strong smell.

    TRStone, you have similar salts left from firing black powder as you do from corrosive primers. So yes the process is similar. Either one will rust the barrel into a piece of junk.

    A single-cure-all that I can apply to two different problems whenever I might encounter them!

    I just LOVE it when I can kill two birds with one...uhhh...ahhh...

    ...ROCK! Yes, that will do nicely.

    One could easily tart up a small bottle of Windex with a generous dollop of Parson's Sudsy Ammonia, and keep it handy for those days when you're plinking with old corrosive military ammo...Just take your brush, a rod, a few patches, and a proper jig along in your range bag, and voila! No more worries. Kewl.
