IDPA Question

I have a Browning HP which I use for IDPA. At the end of each stage we are required to lower the hammer after removing the magazine. If I were to disable this function, would the gun still qualify?

    At the end of a stage, after removing the magazine, the RO will say, "unload and show clear" then, "slide forward" then, "hammer down" then, "holster." Correct me if I am wrong.

    I am not clear as to which function that you are talking about disabling.

    "edit" Yup, rogerreloader is right, just went and looked in the rule book. There is no slide forward or hammer down in IDPA. Just "unload and show clear" then, "holster" Hmmmmm....better have a talk with some ROs (SOs). LOL


    If you are shooting in the "STOCK SERVICE PISTOL DIVISION"
    Here is what it says about modifications.

    INCLUSIVE list of permitted modifications: (If it's not on this list, it can't be
    used in Defensive Pistol competition.)
    Change of sights to another conventional notch and post type
    Change of grips to another style or material that is similar to factory
    configuration (no weighted grips)
    Slip-on grip sock and/or skateboard tape
    Action work to enhance trigger pull as long as safety is maintained
    Reliability work to enhance feeding and ejection
    Internal accuracy work to include replacement of barrel with one of
    factory configuration
    Custom finishes
    NON-INCLUSIVE list of EXCLUDED modifications:
    Externally visible modifications other than grips or sights
    Heavy barrels and/or barrel sleeves (factory or aftermarket)
    Guide rods made of a material different than the factory part it replaces
    Add on weights of any type, weighted magazines
    Sights of non-standard notch and post type
    Porting of barrels (factory or aftermarket)
    Compensators

    I ALSO SHOOT IN IDPA. I DID SHOOT A BERETTA 92 AND GOT THE SAME COMMAND. THERE IS NO HAMMER COMMAND IN IDPA. YOU MAY LOWER THE HAMMER ANY WAY YOU LIKE. THIS RULE IS IN THE RULE BOOK.

    If you are talking about disabling the mag safety, it can be done and you will have to treat the weapon like a 1911, lower the hammer while holding the trigger.

    In a stock Browning HP, if the magazine is out the hammer cannot be lowered. Thus when you pull the slide back to show the clear chamber after removing the magazine, you cannot lower the hammer without putting a magazine back in the pistol (my finger is not long enough to reach the safety in the magazine well).

    My question is: Will disabling the magazine safety violate any IDPA rules for modifications?

    I added a little to the above post. It specifically states in the rule book that there is no "hammer down" rule. I would assume that you can holster without lowering the hammer.

    Has anyone said anything to you at the match about it?

    Thanks for the replies.

    Yes, the SO insists the hammer be lowered at the end of the stage. Which means after I remove the magazine and show a clear chamber, I have to pull an empty magazine out, insert it in the gun, lower the hammer, then remove the magazine.

    If I didn't love the guns (I have two) so much, I would switch to my Colt .45 or USP40. But as it is also my primary carry weapon I like to use it.

    I wonder if this would apply: 'Change of hammer and other trigger action parts to enhance trigger pull'

    The magazine safety does add drag on the triggerpull and the manual and other safety would still work.

    I would point out to the RO how a High Power works and ask him what he wants you to do before starting the match since what he is asking for is impossible. If they will not bend, I would remove the mag safety as it is a bad idea anyway. I wonder what they would do with a pistol like an HSC Mauser that only lets the slide go forward when a magazine is inserted. Where I shoot they give the same command instructions, but I either shoot a 99 Taurus or a 1911 so it is not a problem. I think this sequence has been carried over from IPSC matches.
