VERY long range shooting

My left-handed Son, Dave W, is looking to buy a rifle to shoot targets at 1,000 yards/meters. A wildcat cartridge would be OK. One he is looking at is a .300 Win Mag, necked to 7MM. It's bull barrelled and is a Model 70 left hand action, I believe.

What would be the most accurate combination of action, stock, barrel and caliber for this task??

What kind of money would it take to put this together?

    Well honestly any caliber over .308 will do just fine if the gun is accurized well. I mean, at the national shoots they shoot out to this range with 06 and .308 calibers... so I think the .300 would do just fine. So far as the rest I don't know.

    a nice remington 700, interarms mauser mk10, or a nice winchester 70 action in either 30-06/308/ or 300winmag.

    I personally would go with a .300 winmag for that range. Remington 700 action + McMillian adjustable stock and a good leupold scope.....but then again I'm poor and can't afford none of that schtuff.

    First, you can shoot 1000yd targets with just about any cartridge (45-70, 308Win, 300H&H have all been used). The dedicated LR cartridges advantage lays in reducing the amount of wind effect on the bullet.
    A lot of guy's start with a trued Rem 700 action, add a Lija barrel and MacMillen stock. Cartridges tend to run on the overbore side, with 32+" barrels being common (the length is needed to utilize the extra powder).
    Bullets used are VERY heavy for caliber (240gr+ in the 30cal's) with the highest BC's (BC=.750+) both weight and BC are for wind-bucking not the flatter trajectory.
    The 700 is prefered by smiths because they can easly chuck it into a lathe to correct it's faults, not because it's better. The M-70 can be made to work, but it takes more work to make the fixtures for trueing.
    If money is no object, look at the BAT and Noseka actions.
    Most accurate combination (assuming equil shooters behind the trigger) is a hard call, because the smith that does the work has a greater influance on the package than the components do.
    Just some guesses on pricing
    Receiver 350-1500
    Barrel 200-500 (Figgure 1 a year if he get's serious)
    Stock 300-800
    Trigger 150-250
    Scope base 250
    Scope rings 150
    Scope 500-1500
    Custom Reamer 100-200
    Custom Dies 150
    Labor will probably equil or exceed the cost of the parts.
    Resale value figgure you will get 35 cents on the dollar, as rifles like this have a very limited market. If he's just getting started, a used rifle (by a top LR smith) would be the way to go, and if the rifle comes with the former owners load data and assistance so much the better.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Some of the more serious long-range shooters are using custom made rifles chambered in 50 BMG. That cartridge holds the world record for accuracy at 1000 yards and beyond. The only problem, is that they aren't cheap to own & shoot![:(]

    the 6x284 has been in the wining circles at Camp Perry in the last several years plan on spending 2,200-3,200 depending if scope is needed the rem 700 is a great platform to build on.

    For long range, go with the .50BMG. The ballistics of this round are wonderful. You will feel that you could conquer the world with this round. BTW: I am about 5'4" tall and 120 #'s. I have shot a Barrett, semi-auto, .50BMG on three different occasions now. Even at my size, the .50BMG is fun to shoot and accurate beyond belief. As long as I pulled the butt stock tight into my shoulder and held it there, even a bolt action would not be a problem.

    30-338 [:D][:D][:D] still holds the varmint title @ 3,178 yrds After 5 trys.
    The scope bases are 5" tall[:)] all aside, 30-338 has plenty of poop left at 1000.
