Wal-Mart carries Weatherby Vanguard rifles built by Howa in Japan for Weatherby - so you get American Weatherby warrantee and their superb customer support.
The rifles are available both in standard calibers, and about 4 or 5 Weatherby magnum calibers, up to .300 Weatherby Magnum.
The stainless Vanguard with a synthetic stock costs $469.00, and the blued version with a synthetic stock is $369.00.
I think that these are outstanding values, and there are a couple of the Weatherby Magnum calibers in my future.
Good luck!

I would recommend a Howa or a Savage. Both would probably have to be ordered but it usually only takes a week.

They sell winchester model 70, you might want to look into one of those.

Since you said "cheap"...whatever that means to you....a Marlin thirty thity will take deer in the brush forever and cost half what a bolt or semi will.A Winchester will be a little trimmer and lighter and shoot plenty good enough for brush hunting. If you 're hunting entails longer shots then go for a bolt action in a heavier caliber.I like the Savage line of rifles myself.

If you are "fortunate" enough to reside in the California Republic (take a look at our flag), the answer is "None Of The Above".

It depends on where you live and what range the deer are at.
If you hunt in the woods and the ranges are less than 100 yards, a lever action in .30-30 or .35 Remington will do nicely.
If you live where the shooting ranges are 100 yards and up, you'll probably want a bolt rifle in the .270 to .308 category. For something like that, Savage makes nice, accurate rifles at a reasonable cost.0 -
xracer has nailed it
but if legal where you live buy a savage in 30-06 its a great all around gun and cal. for what you want.
Also was told that wal-mart in cali. doesnt sell firearms! Is this true
or was that person pulling my leg?0 -
Wal-mart has a special order book. So if you have the time ask to see that and look at some of the prices. I think they can order you a Tikka, however the book may change from area to area. Tikka makes a nice bolt action, Remington 700 ADL syn. These may fit you range of cheap. 0 -
Just curious if you have any gun shops in the area. I try to buy guns from local gun dealers instead of chain stores.

I bought a used Weatherby Vanguard in 270 from a small gun shop and ended up with inexpensive deer rifle with scope for less than $450. with tax. I am pleased with the rifle and have taken a couple of deer so far this season. Support your local businesses.

Yes R-C-NO that is correct, several California Walmarts were subjected to a surprise inspection by the Cal DOJ. Walmarts paper work was not up to Cal regulations (a nightmare in it self). Walmart announced that they are suspending gun sales until they can retrain their clerks. Rumor has it that they will resume sales next spring. I will believe it when it happens.............Hondo 0
