Mini-14 acuracy
I have recently purchased a ss mini-14 and was curious about the best possible groups it should be capable of without major modifications, also I was told that the winchester 40 grain ammunition holds the best groups (is this valid?), What is the most accurate ammunition for my money short of handloads? Any advice you guys could give me would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

The Mini 14 was not designed to be a tack driver. When the barrel heats up accuracy goes away. If you shoot slowly you will get 3moa from this rifle with a good scope. It is about the same as any AK type on the market. My 2 cents [8D]

With a little work I hear you can get down to 1"groups at 100 yards. As for the ammo everygun is going to like different ammo, you will just have to find out which one yours will shoot the best groups with by trying different ones. If you go to www.perfectunion.com they have a discussion board for the mini 14 and the people there can help you out.

The best I was ever able to get was 4" at 100 yds. 0 -

The twist of the barrel is designed to shoot the heavier bullets.....and any I shot did very well IF shooting the 62 grain ammo. The 55 grain ammo started to get larger groups. I was very happy with the 62 grain stuff and even shot a lot of Wolf with it very successfully with NO prblems. Might take a little "trial and error" with the ammo to find out what yours will like and be the most accurate. However, you won't ever get it to be a real "tack driver" as the manufacturing tolerances of the action will come into play long before you do.

Just gotta remember that the mini was designed as a workhorse gun that was tough and reliable, and served its purpose, to rid the ranch of pests...wasnt made as a target gun.....I know a guy who has a mini-30, the gun shoots pretty well...

Thanks guys,
I just wanted to see if my expectations were too high. I was thinking that the mini-14 was capable of 6" groups at a 100 yards. Now I know my expectations are not unreasonable. I already have a tack driver I purchased this rifle for fun if I want to shoot gnats ass tight groups I will just have to get my 6mm ppc out of the safe.
Thanks,

Yep, it sure won't shoot with the 6mm PPC (great accuracy cartridge by the way), but I'd say you could get under 4" with factory fodder. 0
