.17 HMR
I've been thinking about getting a .17 HMR any opinions on this little round? Is it worth it compared to a .22? what will it take down etc?

Bass Pro has 3 different .17 HMR's on sale next week. That is all I need and am going to purchase one. Remington semi auto, Savage bolt and I believe a Marlin bolt. What is everyones opinion on which is better?

You don 't need a semi. This is a precision shooter.
I have a Savage with a sloppy trigger but it was fixed with a RilfeBasix kit.

I have not purchased one as of yet but have several friends that have them. They have everything from the expensive ruger s/s, lam, some savage bolts, a nef crackbarrel, and a couple of marlins. And the best shooting one is the savage. Have yet to see the ruger or the marlin come anywhere close to the groups the guys are getting with the heavy barreled savages. And the nef doesnt even deserve mentioning. barely can shoot 1" at 50 yds. I will probably buy the marlin my self just because it is the cheapest s/s bullbarrel laminated stock .17 I have found. But the savage is the most accurate one I have seen.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT FOR ACCURACY, BUT I'VE GOT A TARGET IN FRONT OF ME FROM MY MARLIN 6 SHOTS IN 3/4" @100 YRDS. (5 SHOTS WENT UNDER .375" BUT I PULLED ONE OUT). 0 -
You won't go wrong with the Marlin or the Savage!! I have both and also the 597 and have put together several different rifle scope combos for other people and have yet to find a Savage or Marlin that would not shoot like a houseafire! Even the 597 was a 1" hundred yard gun! My Marlin has done .4's/100 yards and .8's at 200 yards on several occassions! It also has confirmed measured kills on groundhogs of 202, 206 and 206 and a confirmed crow measured kill at 217 yards! The Savage clip doesn't stick out as far as the Marlin and that is one advantage of the Savage over the Marlin. Savage also makes a laminated stainless 93/17HB that is a bit heftier in the hand grip area and the magazine and the clip sticks out the least of all on that one! The Savage laminated ones are not real plentiful!
Whatever one you choose, be sure to put quality glass on it! A few of the different scopes I've used are the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14, Simmon Aatec 3.8-12, Aaetec 2.5-10, Weaver V-16, Redfield 6x18 and one of the neat ones is the Burris FullFeild II with the balistic plex!
When you get ammo, get Hornady or Remington and leave the CCI for the other guys!
Clean the bore before you shoot the rifle! You will not have to clean it often as it doesn't copper foul like I figured it would! Accuracy will stay for 100's of rounds between cleanings! The triggers on both the Marlin and Savage are not exactly BR quality! You can take them out and polish them and help them a little but for about $70.00 you can get a RifleBasix trigger for either one! Good Luck!! GHD...pastor at the church of GHD, 25-06 and 17HMR0 -
