The length of the Trapdoor Carbine barrel is 22 inches. If you are looking for a true carbine,be sure that the gun is not a cut down rifle. Check the forend of the stock for a pluged ramrod channel. The carbine barrel will NOT accept the bayonet as it is to large in diameter. Carbine front sights are .673-.728 inches high compared to the rifle front sight of only .645-.653 inches high. Carbines before about serial number 40000 do not have butt traps in the butt stock, after this number all carbines do have them, also before this number the stocks have a long thin wrist while after this number the wrist is shorter and thicker. Starting with the Model 1879 the receiver was made wider and the hinge pin was made longer. All carbine rear sight bases and sight leaves are marked with the letter "C". No carbines were made without the sling bar and ring. Inspector's initials are found behind the sling bar. Some cut down rifles will have the rear of the sling bar in the middle of the inspectors initials.
Hope that this has been of some help to you.
