Winchester Mod. 12, 28ga.???
I have a chance to buy a model 12, 28ga. barrel.
Did the Model 12, 28ga. use a 20ga. receiver? If so, could a 28ga. barrel be fitted to a 20ga. without extensive modifications?
Was the mag. tube a different dia.?

28ga m-12's were both built from the ground up and built on 20ga frames. some were true production runs, some were clean up production runs. in either configuration, they are very sensitive to get working. but once they work, they are a joy to own. i shoot a 28ga m-12's. mine is a factory sleeved 20ga bbl slipped into a 28 frame with 28 parts attached. in all due respect, if you are just getting the bbl with plans of shooting it on a 20, give up. it will take you about 2 years to get all the right parts gathered, and another 2 years to get a smith willing to do it and there no guarentee it will ever work! i had a guy in MO. take mine in to just(repair.) it took 2 years. problem? the shell feed arm wasnt lining the hull up with the bore right. we had to redesign the complete arm by hand and hone by hand! give up before you start! trust me! even a properly assembled 28 is quirky!

Taperloc: I concur with bobski that the Md 12 28 ga was built on the 20 ga. frame. However there are alot of parts that are unique to the 28 ga. Simmons Gun Repair & Sales in KS, (913) 782-3131 does convert 20 ga and 16 ga. guns to 28 ga. (Yes the Vent Rib Company) The last price I heard on this was about $800. but since you would already have the barrel they wouldn't have to reroll the barrel or sleeve the chamber. These so called reworked 28s don't have the value as an original, anywhere between a grand to $2500. Mostly depending on the wood and condition. You don't say if the barrel you are thinking about buying is a plain, or solid rib, or if it has a some type of choke device like a Cutts on it. Since I buy and sell barrels, and you only seem to run across a 28 ga once in a blue moon, that barrel most likely will set you back $350 to $700. unless the person who is selling it has no clue. All in all with the cost of the barrel and the "rework" you may never get or original money back. At any given time I know where you can go get an original 28 for $2900. and up, depending on grade and condition. Bottom line is how much money do you want to spend, and how bad do you want one.
