hunting in dense cover

I am looking for a short length rifle to hunt in dense cover and brush. Needs to be a lever action or semi-auto. What calibers would you recomend. I have a 30-30 so please not that choice. As always thanks for your replies.

    What do you plan to hunt? If it is deer I would look at one of the Ruger rifles in 44mag. My 2 cents

    I use a marlin 336 in 35 remington have used a savage 99 in .300 sav. Either works for me, but If I had to make a choice I would find one of the Savages in .358 win. Nothing wrong with a 30-30, except they are like @$$holes, everyone has one.

    Seems this questions has been around for all of the ages. Any caliber will do as long as you have a clear path to the target. One limb, twig or other obstruction is enough to deflect a bullet from it's intended target. You didn't say how far you were shooting in the thick stuff, but if you don't want the old reliable 30-30, then try the .44Mag or a 12 gu slug/buckshot.

    Hey Todd, just thought of something else. Since I hunt in the heavy brush(my favorite place), I use a Thompson Contender and it works well. I will be using a caliber this year, .444Marlin.

    870 with iron sights shooting slugs works for me

    Ever Consider a Marlin 1895SS....? 22" Barrel and in 45-70...Knock a Moose on His Butt and will not deflect easlily...Just a Thought....

    I second the 45-70....you can get the 1895 in 18.5 inch and 22 inch barrels....handles quick, doesnt deflect easy....factory loads now for all big game, from whitetails to moose...

    I'll third the good captain's thoughts on the 45-70, maybe even the .444 Marlin.

    A Marlin Guide Gun in either chambering will take care of anything you want to hunt or defend from in dense brush. Put some glow sights on it.
