Winchester 1873 in 38 Cal.
Did they ever make a Wnichester 1873 with an 18 inch barrel ? The tubular mag. stops at the end of the forearm. Is this normal ? Also, is the dust cover suppose the go back with the action, or is it manual like mine ? It is 38 Cal. Thanks

Winchester 73, Saddle Ring Carbine, Caliber 38-40......Some were manual I'm told.....But all I've ever seen are the ones that move back with the Bolt.......

A Model 1873 with an "original" 18" barrel is a special order gun, and yes, a few were made (but are very rare). The short magazine is referred to as a "button magazine".
I presume that what you have is a "short" Rifle with an octagon barrel[?] The Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbines (SRC) will have a round barrel, and should have a full length magazine tube.
The dust cover should also open when the action is cycled.
