trap shoting gun?

I am starting to really enjoy trap shooting and I was wondering what is a good mid price range gun and where is a good place to check out your ideas on the web. Thanks for any help.

    Here's my 2 cents: Mid price range is different to different people. I would go to a gun shop and pick up guns in your price bracket and find one that fits you well. You'll know it when you find the right one. Mount the gun, and it's "there". No moving your head around, you'll be looking right down the barrel. The balance and feel will be good. Don't limit yourself to "trap" guns. The perfect gun for you may be an auto or a pump. This is the first step to getting better at trap. The first time I shot a gun that fit me was at the trap range. I was doing my usual, missing more than I hit, when my brother-in-law handed me his gun. It was amazing. I could do no wrong. I wasn't aware of the gun when I shot. He explained, "This gun fits you". Lesson learned. That gun happened to be a Browning Citori (over and under). I bought one. Since then, I have found an auto loader that fits me also, a Browning 2000. While I'm still not really good at trap (compared to some), I can hold my own at most shoots. If you like trap, you should give sporting clays a try. I did and I'm hooked. Hope all this helps. Chas.

    Go to www.trapshooters.com and click on the discussion page. I suggest starting out with a Rem. 1100. A good trap model can be purchased used in the $450 - $500 range. If you do not prefer an autoloader, Browning BT-99's are available used for around $750 Browning Citori's are usually around $1000 used in good condition. A lot depends on your personal preferance and how deep your pocketbook is. Break'em all!

    i can talk 10 pages on the subject, but instead i'll keep it simple with 7 points.....
    1. if your club has a rule that you cant pick up hulls to reload, and you reload, dont get a semi auto...unless you volunteer to clean the range at closing in order to get your hulls. if its a public range, kiss em goodbye. 2. define midprice? some trap guns go for 25,000.00. some go for 400.00. that makes a mid price gun somewhere around 12,000.00! im assuming you mean a beginners gun. 3. odds are, if you keep at the game, somewhere along the line youre gonna miss a lot and blame the gun. then the horse swapping will begin. (get this one get that one, no i dont like the feel, no it kicks, nononononno and so on.) its part of the trap shooters makeup! so...why not just go out and buy the best and forget the 10 years of horse trading? get to know your friends at the range and ask to shoot their guns. find one that says, 'its me! its me!' 'cant live without you!' and buy it. whatever you pay, will be a savings in the long run when you figure in the cost of buying and selling 10 guns looking for the right one. 3. ensure it has a monte carlo or straight trap stock with perfect balance. 4. if you plan on trap doubles, get and o&u. if all you like is handicap trap...get a single bbl. 5. italians make the best trap guns, followed by the germans, then japan, then....usa. sorry. facts are facts. 6. rule of thumb....bottom line....youre wasting your time by asking opinions when buying particular guns. one may like blondes and the others may like redheads. you cant mold yourself to someones opinion based on a like. you have to shoot it and determine the results. your scores and the gun will sell itself. shoot, shoot, shoot! 7. you can never go wrong with a citori or a 11-87/1100/BT-99. double beads are a must. let us know what you end up with. good luck!

    A couple of points: If the empty hull doesn't hit the ground it ain't theirs. On a semi-auto a rubber band around the front of the ejection port keeps the hull in the gun for single shot trap.
    On a break open gun I stop the hull from being ejected with the palm of my hand. Again if the hull doesn't hit the ground it isn't theirs.

    good points...but for a new guy...its one less thing he needs to worry about. i agree, the rubber band is the best catcher ever made! and free too! whatya say about the new guy getting a bt99?

    [:D] Sometimes it isn't the gun so much as what you can do with it. I dearly love going to a local public trap range and outshooting competitors with custom-fit shotguns that cost 2,3,or $ 4,000.00.
    What do I use to do this? My old bolt-action Marlin Goose Gun with the leather sling that I paid $95.00 for - used. It has a 36-inch full-choke barrel. I shot 21 out of 25 the first time I ever loaded this old thing - it fits me well. By all means find a gun that fits you well, but, like any good workman, the quality of the tools is irrelevant if you can't use them efficiently. As Musashi says in the famous ' Book Of Five Rings' "practice, practice, practice!" [;)] Peace.........

    Any gun that fits you good can be a good trap gun...I average above 20, and my trap gun for the past few years was my mossberg 835, now I've switched to my Baikal o/u 20 gauge...lets me get used to my hunting guns and still shoot competition....I'm no pro shooter, but I usually do pretty good....have my bad nights every now and then, too, though....

    lets not forget some murphies rules. 1. your gun will fail when you need it the most. use a cheap gun, and it will break when you are the farthest from a smith...its usually happens on the first shot dove season! 2. if you grow up with a gun, no one will know it better than you. but....if all you do is hit 20 instead of 25, youre just practicing mistakes. when you can go clean and go 100 straight into a shootoff, then you have bragging rights on a trap range with your favorite mount. otherwise, spare no cost to get a gun that will serve you well. in trap, its all about hearing the puller call 5-5-5-5-5 -switch!
