    I am trying to find out the value of a Remington 12 Gauge Sportman 58.

    Any Ideas on how to go about it or on the possible value itself?

    Any one thinking of buying a Remington model 58 shotgun should look it over carefully. The problem is the crack forming in the receiver in the area of the cutout for the action arm. On these models there is no relief cut to handle stress.

    I am not exactly sure what I have. I will do my best to describe it.

    It is has a ribbed 12 Gauge Skeet barrel with front and rear beads. The barrell is just under 25" long from the tip to the receiver. The wood looks to possibly be maple. (not sure) The stock and arm are in very good condition (no cracks or scratches) the receiver has some etching on both sides. One side it says Remington Sportsman-58 and has two dogs flushing four birds. The other side (where shells are inserted) has etching of 4 ducks in mid flight. All of the etching is very easy to see as it has no rust or scratches. The Blueing of the gun appears to be good as well. There also is a magazine cap with the letters H and L on it. I assume that is adjustable for high brass and low brass shells. There are some very minor scrathes that have apparently come with years of use. It is in complete workine order.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am definitely not schooled in the value of firearms.

    I would say your 58 is worth $225 to $275 retail. Look under completed auctions for guns that sold. If this is in fact a skeet gun(rather than a field gun with a skeet barrel) there might be some initials on the bottom of the receiver in front of the loading port like SA or SC. That would enhance the value.

    do you have pic? if so email me @ my email. click on my name to the left and you can contact me. is there an (SX) in front of the serial number or behind it? let me know. sounds like the wood may be blonde instead of walnut. does it have a yellower look instead of brown? if so, you have a 1958 m-58SX skeet gun. im interested if youre selling. let me know!

    The wood is definteley Walnut. It has a darker tone. There are no initials near the receiver or loading port. The only letters or numbers are on the receiver itself (serial number) and on the base of the barrell.

    Any other help is appreciated.

    Sorry, I guess the serial number actually ends with the letter V. I was typing too fast and not thinking.
