winchester 1894 loose barrel

For some reason my posting has been locked out? I tried to post a picture with no luck. As I read the replies, I see that there are differing thoughts on a remeady, and the bolt blue. Is it just unheard of for a barrel to loosen up? Would it be a possibility that being a black powder gun the owner took it completely apart several times to clean it? Could something be put on the threads to tighten it up. It just moves enough that you can feel it. It takes awile to even tell where it's moveing at.

    Please explain just exactly how your barrel is loose... does it rotate slightly off center, or does it rock up and down, or?

    As for why it is loose, your theory is possible, but until we can determine what you are defining as "slightly loose", it is nothing but a guess. It is unusual for a non Takedown barrel to work loose. If it turns out that it is slightly loose from being over rotated a few times, then yes, there is something that can be used on the threaded area to stop it from working loose (Loctite). If you would like, you can send pictures to me, and I can post them here if anyone else is interested.

    you can just feel movment side to side, if the but stock were in a vise the tip of the barrel might move over side to side 1/16th maybe 3/32.It's not much, like I said the first time I don't want to hurt the value any more than it might be with the barrel loose. I don't plan on selling it. I just like my guns to be in the best working, orignal condition I can make them. But I (think) that it would be better to have a all original 1894 with a loose barrel than one that has had some machineing done to it?? I guess it just depends on what a person likes the best??

    With a Model 1894 of the vintage yours is, leave it as is... it will have considerably higher collector value if left as is... providing it is still 100% factory original. All pre-1899 Winchester Model 1894s are highly collectable. You should consider obtaining a factory letter for it from the Cody Firearms Muesum - http://www.bbhc.org/firearms/QandA.cfm (click on the "WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT MY FIREARM?" link).

    My personal guess on why the barrel is loose, is that the threads on the shank and/or the frame have been worn or damaged from repeated removal & reinstallation of the barrel. You might try removing the barrel yourself and inspecting the theaded sections for any unusual wear. If you aren't sure how to remove the barrel, take it to your local 'smith and have him look at it for you. Good luck with it.
