3006 to 300 win and 357mag to max

I have a handy rifle with a 06 barrel, and I was wanting to know if it could be rechambered for 300winmag? And also could the 357 barrel be rechambered for 357max? New England don't offer either caliber.

    I'd venture that the action would be plenty strong enough, my only question would be the barrel dimensions being up to par. Check the chamber area of the barrel and take some measurements, is the longer chamber going to extend too far into the area where the barrel assy begins to narrow?

    I would venture to say that the 300 would be to high a pressure for the H&R frame but dont hold me to that. Plus I would hate to think what the recoil would like be on such a lite gun

    As far as the 357 goes it can and has been done.(I believe H&R had a chambering for the max but was discontinued) And from what I've read it seems to be more accurate with the max rounds.

    How long is the 30-06 barrel? If it isn't at least 24", I wouldn't bother with a mag conversion. If you want more horepower why not consider the Ackley 30-06 improved? You of course would have to hand load for the Ackley but it will deliver better performance.

    You have to set the barrel back, in order to do the Ackley cartridge correctly. It will not headspace correctly if you try to just re-chamber. This option isn't workable, since the Handy rifle can't be set back.
