Bad Ruger 77 ???

Please advise on Ruger!!!Hit the range to sight in new Ruger Mod. 77 Mark2 in .243 caliber. I couldn't keep it on the paper target. 1st I made sure all screws were very tight. Then I checked to see if the barrell was "floating " not touching the wood stock. I couldn't get the piece of paper to slip in between the two. Also the large front bell of the scope is also touching the barrell. Could these 2 things be the problem with zeroing the rifle?? Thanks for the help. Steve

    That and also I had a .220 swift that I couldn't get on paper at 30 yards. Struggled for a couple hours. A more knowledgable shooter than I shimmed my scope. We finally got it on paper but he said it wasn't right. He's seen a couple other 77's do this. Somehow, you may have gotten some mismatched rings. Go back where you got it and explain what's going on. They put a different rear ring on mine and you could visually see the scope settle in. Still haven't had a chance to get to the range to try it but by the gunshop, it seems to be a somewhat common occurance.

    Steve..... The fact that the front of the scope is touching the barrel sounds like at least some of the problem.

    The scope should only be contacting the rings that mounts it to the rifle. Under recoil it may be getting tweeked each time you pull the trigger.

    Address the scope problem first, the objective bell should not touch the barrel. Either slide it forward in the rings or get a taller set of rings.
    Next will be to try a varity of factory ammo's in it, this is the expensive part, both brand and loadings (std, premium, light, med and heavy bullets). Shoot groups of 5 with each varity, allowing the barrel to cool completly between groups. You need to find out what your rifle prefers to digest.
    On the stock, it may be "pressure point" bedded, which is why you can't get a piece of paper to run thru the barrel channel, some rifles (esp. those with "skinny" barrels) shoot better this way. To see if "free floating will help, put a piece of busness card under the action (this will raise the receiver/barrel assy, temporarly removing the pressure point), if it shoots better this way, than "free float the barrel when you glass bed the receiver.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    I was thinking Scope also...Just for Fun..try another Scope....If its on the paper, then You'll know for sure that was part of the problem..
