Having been a long time rifle and pistol deer hunter, I am thinking about trying the Thompson Contender. Anyone have any experience/info or advice re caliber or the gun in general? Thanks. [:)]

    Well...........,

    I've had just about every standard chambering and a lot of non-standard chamberings for the Contender, both in short and long barrel versions.

    The newer Encore will allow cartridges loaded up in the 55,000 - 60,000 PSI range, while the Contender models are limited to 35,000 - 40,000 PSI loadings. Any Contender I owned shot reasonably well, but don't expect target rifle accuracy. It is, after all, a break-open single shot with interchangeable buttstock/handgrip and interchangeable forearm, depending if used in handgun configuration or carbine.

    The chamberings are quite wide ranging from the factory, plus lots of specialized smiths make all kinds of standard and wildcat versions. I've reduced my collection drastically of late, but still have .17 HMR, .22LR, .22 Hornet, .223 Rem, .256 Win Mag, .375 Win.

    All are shooters - the same frame has carbine stocks as well as handgrips. Just be careful to assure a barrel length of 16" minimum if in carbine mode to conply with federal rules. A handgun can have ANY length barrel.

    A friend(now deceased)shot his Contender with his reloads and scope.

    He shot many 1/2 inch groups at 25 yds.These were .44 Mag. loads off the bench.

    I am confused at times.

    We park on driveways,

    and drive on parkways.

    Hi Texdoc and welcome to the forum.I don't think you'll be disappointed in getting a Contender or an Encore.Most of the ones I own or have owned were good shooters.I usually "roll" my own ammo for them and I haven't had any problems.If you want to discuss the particulars or are looking for info for them my email,is; rrobert_l_@hotmail.com

    Last year on my first pistol hunt (I usually only bow hunt)I shot a deer w/ a .44 mag and it was pretty devastating and ruined alot of meat. This year I'm thinking of switching to a .357 maximum. I wouldn't want a .223, not a very good brush buster. Just my 2 cents from my limited experience, Good luck, Ben.
    P.S. Contenders kick like a pissed off mule, the encore is more pleasant to shoot; However, the contender feels more ergonomically correct to me.
