New england handi rifle any good
I was thinking on buying a New England Handi Rifle in a 45-70 for about $215.00 new. Is the a good gun and bullet?

I have two Handi's. .22 Hornet and a Ultra Varmint. Both have performed excellent for me. 0 -
My experience with a 243 has been very good. very accurate.
I recommend them especially to new shooters, one shot means take your time and make it count, it makes new shooters a better marksman.0 -
I think the handi rifles and other New England firearms are fine. I'd rather haul one of them out in the rain or down the river rather than my Red Label or 1100.
I have heard of some problems with accuracy, but only on the rifled slug barrels. Nothing bad about the 45-70's.

The 45-70 is a good brush round, but I like the quick follow ups from my lever gun in these situations....It does hold its own in small openings, as well....pretty flat shooting out to 100, only drops a little over an inch at 100 when zeroed at 50...any specific reason you want it in the single shot, though? A shoulder pounder like that out of that lighter gun might be a little punishing....but then again, I like the Ruger #1 in 45-70 too, havent had a chance to shoot it, but I do like the looks of it, a possible consideration down the road a ways....but do what you want, I dont think the cartridge will disappoint you, but you might want to consdier a gun like the Marlin 1895 if you really like the 45-70 instead of the single shot....

I have a N E in 17 HMR and just picked up a second for my brother.
As for accurate well all I can say is it loves going out to 200 yards
and the only prob I have is the cheap scope I put on[:(!]

I have 2 NEF Handi rifle 45-70 and 223.I also own 2 lever action 45-70s.i think the felt recoil is more on the lever guns because of the stock style 0 -

Those who have been on this forum for a while know that "shotguns" are my "thing". However, I do own rifles (autoloading, lever, bolt, and single-shot), autoloading handguns, revolvers, and single-shot handguns.
I have safe(s)--that's pleural--full of firearms. There are four long guns that are not in the safe(s). Three of them are NEF's. A 12 gauge, a 20 gauge, and a .44 Mad-Max, and a 12 gauge American Gun Company-6 wire "Rose" Damascus barreled, hammer gun. Hopefully, that will give you some idea of how I value NEF's. By the way, the .44 Mad-Max is a proprietry cartridge designed by James C. Gates, who is the moderator of the "Reloading" forum on "ShotgunWorld.com". I have had the honor and pleasure of hunting and fishing with him on a couple of occasions. Without his permission, you can't get a reamer from JGS in Coos Bay, Oregon for the .44 Mad-Max---which as far as I am concerned is "THE" ultimate "hog" cartridge for the costal marsh hogs in Florida.
Yes, I can put my hands on other NEF's---but they are inside the safe(s) such as the .22 Hornet and .357 Maximum. As you may or may not know, they are part of "Marlin" and your can't find a better value for the price. As for the 45-70---well that is not a cartridge that I find of much use in north-central Florida. You say---well you need it for "grizzley" or "moose"---I say "fooey"---I will use James C. Gate's "Dixie-Terminator" in my shotguns. I then have a .75 caliber "Paradox" gun on my "Mossberg" shotgun frame, and can group an ounce and three-eights--.50 metplat "bullet" within 4-inches at 100 meters.
