HI,THIS IS ED BURTON HPOE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME WIHT A O&A ON SHILOH SHASPS.CAN YOU FIRE CAL 45-70 IN A 45-110 I HAVE SEEN THIS USED BY A PERSON AT THE RANGE,PLEASE LET ME KNOW YES OR NO THANKS FOR YOU HELP.ED AKA NUTCASE.[?]

  Yes, you can. .45-70 can be fired in .45-110, and both may be fired in .45-120, all Sharps straght-walled cartridges. Since they are blackpowder cartridges you may experience chamber fouling when firing the shorter cartridges in the longer chambers that will prevent firing the longer cartriges until the chamber is cleaned.

  While it is best to use the cartridge for which the rifle is chambered,in fact, the only difference between the .45-70 Government and the .45-110 Sharps Straight is the length of the case. The length of the .45-70 is 2.10 inches while the .45-110 Sharps has a case length of 2-7/8 inches. This is a long jump for the .45-70 bullet before it enters the barrel,accuracy is seldom good and prolonged use of the shorter cartridge case can ,in time, damage the chamber. This type of substitution works better in the the shorter case of the .45-90 Sharps Straight with it's case length of 2.40 inches,but it is still a bad idea for extended use.
  The .45-90,.45-110 and the .45-120 are at their best with black powder. If you plan to use smokeless powder the shorter case of the .45-70 is far more efficient and will do everything that the longer cases will do.
  Hope that the above answers your question that it is possible,but it is not a good idea.
