Short action or not?

I am relativley new to hunting this neing my first year, my new inlaws had me come out with them this year & I will forever be greatfull!! I will be buying a gun of my own for next years hunting season, and I'm pretty much sold on the .300 {some damn big animals around this area}. I was at the local gunshop the other day and the owner insists that if I am looking at a .300 that I get a short action? What do the experts say? Reading this forum for quite some time now I'm sure that you will have some excellent advise for a "newbie" thanks again!

    I use a 300 weatherby and have never really found a need to go to the the newer short action mags. The only advantage I can think of a shorter action is that the rifle is shorter and possibly faster followup shot working the short action.

    You may want to compare prices on the rifles and ammunition.

    sounds like the gun shop over stocked on the .300 short mags., like rsynder said check the prices first. that 1/4" you save will be expensive.

    Comparitive pricing is always good idea. As far as short mag verses longer mags my take on it is barrel length. There are lots of 300 Win mags out there with 24" barrels and that do not always get all they can out of their powder capacity. The new "short mags" are hyped that they get 95% of the long mags velosity with the 24" barrels. If you decide to go with the old, just as good, longer magums I would want to buy a rifle with a 26" barrel. Especially if it was to be a Weatherby. Other hype on the short mags is that the total package is more compact and nimble, like I said hype. If the critters you intend to hunt will be larger and such, I might think about the .338 Win Mag as it does work fine with a 24" barrel. The .338 Win Mag is plenty flexable, with the assortment of bullets available, to hunt anything from smaller deer to the larger bears. Welcome to the great outdoors.

    I have not been able to see any advantage, at all, in the short magnums.
