No, the 30 wasn't ever offered from the factory in what is now considered an "assault weapon". There have been products to modify them with aftermarket products that would move it into the assault weapon category.
I wouldn't consider it even close to the ideal home protection but it would fit the bill if that's what you had. I'd think a short-barrel shotgun or strong handgun would be a MUCH better option. The 7.62 is meant more for intermediate distance, not nearly point-blank like you'd likely encounter in a home protection role.
    Welcome to GB.

I love my mini-30 it's a shooter. But Home defense? NO WAY. Way tooo powerful. It's a rifle. It could potentially kill someone in the next house. The man before me was correct, get yourself a pump shotgun, or a pistol. If you are not familiar with guns then the ONLY way to go is a Double Action Revolver. Check out the smiths in .357 or even .44 special, Taurus also makes some very fine revolvers which may cost less and are every bit as good. Then buy hollow points, or frangible bullets if you're worried about people in the next room. And if you are unfamiliar w/ shooting, get lessons from someone who knows and practice safety. I worry, maybe unfairly, about people who weren't raised around guns and purchase them w/out proper instruction. So please always remember what's behind your target.
