You don't need to pay for packets. You can get applications and info direct from the BATFE.
One requirement that disqualifies some; Your place of business must be zoned commercial. Of course this is not applicable if you live in an area with no zoning.0 -

Doug, The agent must have his own criteria for denying a ffl or BATFE has recently changed their requirements for qualifying for a license.

Herschel is correct; this "no store front, no FFL" misinformation has been circulating for years. There are many dealers out there who do not have "store fronts".
However, Miles, getting an FFL is not an end in itself; it is just one step in the process of establishing a business of buying/selling firearms. ATFE agents WILL deny your application if they believe that you are just getting an FFL simply as a way of buying your own firearms at wholesale. As in most other business, you may also need a FEIN, State tax #, traders/merchant license, zoned premises, and/or business plan.

All points are well taken. One additional caution.Having an FFL is an open invitation to purchase more items than you would ever need.I had an FFL for 15 yrs,and while keeping the doors open and the wolves away,I ended up doubling my collection and having enough ammo and accessories to equip most Third World countries.Further, since I live in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, I can't do much with any of it-Bob

I received my FFL a year ago and do not have a store front. Just call the ATF office and ask for an FFL application packet. You should receive it in a few days. Fill it out and mail it back in with a check for $300.00. Also you must give the Chief Law Enforcement a copy of your FFL application which will be included in the packet. Make sure you have a secure storage for firearms as you must sign a document saying you do. After you mail it in wait wait wait and wait an ATF inspector will contact you with a date to come out and talk to you. After he comes by it's just a matter of a month or two and if all is in good order you should receive your FFL. JUST a point to mention as others on here have already CHECK WITH YOUR ZONING OFFICE FIRST to make sure they don't have a problem with you running a business from your home. My house is not zoned commercial but the zoning office did'nt have a problem with it as long as I didn't have a sign out in my front yard or display cases in my house to showcase firearms. I haven't sold alot of guns (about 30 this year) but it has been fun and I've added alot to my collection along the way.
