JSC Barnaul Ammo---Any good?
I bought a couple of boxes of gen-yoo-wine Rooskie ammo to feed my newly-acquired Mosin-Nagant: 203 grain SP 7.62mm x 54R made by some outfit called JSC Barnaul Machine-Tool Plant (!) Does anybody know anything about this make of ammo? Is it any good? Is it hot-loaded compared to, say, Sellier & Bellot? And what the HELL is this dark-red shiny laquery-looking crap I see around the primer and the bullet just above the cartridge neck? Sealant?

It's decent ammo. Surprisingly, Barnaul doesn't put nearly as much lacquer on their .223 or 7.62x39 ammo as Wolf does, but they seem to put twice as much on their 7.62x54R ammo[:D] Ammo is pretty hot and burns fairly clean, the only problem you might have is with the bolt not wanting to open easily due to the lacquer bonding to the chamber under the firing heat and pressure. I try to keep the laquered ammo in the autos so that they cycle while the case is still hot. I'd stick with the S&B as it is a copperwashed steel case and cycles easier. The goop around the primer and bullet is a sealant to keep the cartridge sealed from moisture.
