Reloading Question 357Max dies
I have a Dan Wesson 357max I want to reload some ammo for it my question is can I use my regular 357mag dies or do I have to get 357maximum dies?Also if you can use either which one works best?

I'm curious about this also....I have the same gun you have, a Dan Wesson .357 max ctg revolver in 8" heavy barrel.....rounds are pretty scarce anymore for it.....btw, I love that gun.

I read some where I beleive it was a reloading book that you could use the regular 357mag dies.It sounds like we do have the exact same gun mine also has the 8" barrel.I bought it about a year ago and it came with 500 rounds of ammo and another 200 empties now I am running a little low on ammo.Cabelas has rcbs 357maximum dies I may just pick up a set. 0 -
You can use a shorter die for a longer round, you just can't full length resize. .44 special die for .44 mag, .38 special die for .357 mag & .38 special or .357 mag die for .357 maximum. Since the case is not fully supported I suppose it might be possible to crush the case if too much pressure is applied but I have never had it happen.
This of course works best when using the same gun & in a revolver there is a possibility one cylinder might be slightly different & cause a round to be hard to chamber or extract. I have a .357 maximum barrel for my Thompson contender & the .357 mag die works great.0 -
My experience is the same as Gruntld -- Using 357 mag dies for the MAX in a Contender barrel. Worked out great.

Hi drjinc, you can use your .357 mag dies by simply putting a spacer between the press and the locking ring on the die. These are made by Redding. They come in a set of three spacers. One is for .357, one is for .44 and one can be used to allow seating a bullet without crimping. I have these sets in stock for $5.75 plus shipping. 0
