410 over and under advice
I am wandering what brand of 410 over and under to buy. I want one improved barrel and one modified barrel. What brand names should I look at to get the most for my money.

full and full are the most common. finding a mod/full might take a while. i assume you are going to hunt? how much doe do you have? russia imports and some euro imports a cheap enough and you can find them for around 300.00. or, go with a browning citori for around 1,000.00.. 0 -
Most of the time, the set up of chokes you mentioned were in 20 ga. guns. I'm not saying there weren't some special ordered, but I've never personally seen one in .410, it's always full/full. The only gun I'm aware of in .410 with anything other than full is the Browning Citori or XS, neither of which you will get ahold of for less than $1400 new and very little less used (unless it's stolen).
And just finding one, other than on Gunbroker, is pretty rare.
Russian Baikals are supposedly here now(new, $400 to 450), Charles Daly was supposed to have a couple models available ($530 to 650) and American Arms (1988, $450 to ?, used). None of these has interchangable chokes like the Browning. You might look for a Winchester 101 skeet, but I think these will be bored skeet, and can be somewhat rare and ultimately expensive, altho the Blue Book says $600 to 650 (if you can pry it out of his fingers). You may be able to buy something like a Baikal or a Charles Daly and have a gunsmith hone the choke out some to get what you want.0 -
Go ahead and buy a full/full choked .410 bore. Then have one of the barrels reamed to modified choke. (Done correctly, this process requires some effort, since a good smith will ream a little, test patterns, ream a little, test patterns, etc., until he gets it right. It would be best if you told him what load you want to shoot out of the modified barrel, so he can use it for testing. A different load might not shoot an improved pattern.) Check out the cost of the mod and add it to the cost of the gun to get an accurate total cost of the gun set up as you want it.

You may want to look at the Verona line of over & unders. I just recently purchased one of their sporting clay models and am very satisfied with the quality and workmanship for the price.
As for the .410 you are interested in, there is very little difference in the choke of this gauge because of such a small amount of shot. Most small bore guns are choked tight because of this and offer the shooter a tighter pattern for hunting. Check out GB auction # 13440490. It is a Verona .410 O/U choked F&M. I was interested in a low priced .410 O/U and what I found (including the Russian Baikal) were made on a 20 gauge frame. This makes the barrels much thicker in the breech area and the breech itself the size of a 20 gauge shotgun with weight probably more than a 20 ga. I wanted a nice neat little .410 --- which I did not find. Instead I bought the Baikal 20 gauge 0/U and like it a lot. Hope this helps. 0 -
A few of us have been holding our breath and hoping that Ruger will finally offer their 28 ga., that does have a true 28 ga. frame, in .410 or that they might even make a dedicated frame. It truly would be "the Ultimate" .410. All others including my Browning citori are based on a 20 ga. frame, to the best of my knowledge. 0 -
