96 Swede

I was fortunate enough to buy a really pristine, numbers-matching 96 at an auction this past weekend. Can anyone tell me how to read the brass disc or refer me to a site that explains the grading?

    I was gonna be a big boy and really give you some good stuff, but, when I checked my "favorites" site,....it was gone and moved.
    Don't give up. What you need is just there, somewhere.
    If you got any computer skill at all, you will find it way faster than me again. I regret losing it, as it was very expansive,....do these things just fade away from your favorites, if you do not use them periodically, or what.....I see good stuff dissappearing all the time.
    Shotgun News had a big article on disc mk'ings too, a while back. I lost that also.

    The disc is for bore diameter and bore condition. I'm sure you can figure it out if you examine it carefully. Little triangle stamps should point to the applicable numbers for the diameter. Condition was graded 1,2,3; a little stamp should indicate one of the three. No stamp for the condiditon indicates a new barrel, if I recall correctly.

    The disc on mine shows bore diameter, 6.49mm in the case of my rifle.

    I just give it a good try again with Google. I found something similar, but, not the nice color pic site that I once had.
    I tried to copy and bring the thing up, independantally, but, it failed. I'm sure I didn't get all the characters correct.
    But, you can easily do this yourself by going to google with "Sweedish stock discs".
    I got there myself in no time. I clicked on a few things, and I'm pretty certain that one of these was the site I preferred,....but, things just did not go through. (among others)(the old "404" appeared)
    Maybe this whole thing is being upgraded, and will be ok later.

    There is a "pie" section numbered 1,2,3. A stamped triangle over any number indicates bore condition, #1 being pristine bore - #3 being pretty much a junker. The other "pie" section is numbered 1 to 0. The triangle stamp over a number means bore diameter: 6.50 to 6.59.

    Kdub, a #3 grade bore to the Swedes is still better than the vast majority of surplus rifle bores, judging by the ones I have seen.

    Yep, you're right, redcedars - them Swedes were sure picky when it came to their rifles! I've seen #3's that had the rifling worn down to increase the bore size, yet NEVER saw one that had corrosion pits due to improper cleaning. The inspector's #3 usually meant it didn't meet their high standards.

    I was concerned with just how I might once again come on to that site, not being very computer wise.....because I did completely delete it from "favorites".
    I was gonna ask, but then, thought I would look at Google, by typing in "The House of Karlina".
    Boy, you sure get some good sounding hits,...but the wanted stuff don't come up. It states that it is in a state of repairs.
    "House of"...has got to be it, or, will surely cover as good.
    I'm going to keep a handy "post-it" note out where I don't forget, and regularily check.
