S&W .38 Special CTG Ser#104170 ?????
I recently was given my great grandfather's .38 special. I am curious of its value. I dont see any other markings other than the serial number and "oe 8198" under the cylinder on the frame and on the arm holding the cylinder itself. . It also has "Marcas Registradas" under the Made in the USA stamp. The only history I have on it is that is was purchased near Las Vegas, NV in the early 1950's.

What type of sights does it have? Type of finish? Condition? Barrel length? Exact location of the serial #? For a reasonable appraisal sight unseen these details are important.
Assuming it is a fixed sight Military/Police model in average condition, $200 + or - Obviously the fact that it was your grandfather's is more important than the sale value.
It may be a collectible variant, but this can't be determined without more information. The "Marcas Regitstradus" is a standard marking.

The "MARCAS REGISTRADAS" marking is a sign that the gun is a post-WWII gun. There should also be a letter on the butt in addition to the serial number. That, along with the type of sights (fixed or adjustable) would help determine which model you have. There were several different models of S&W's made in .38 S&W Special caliber, so more info is really needed to determine which one you have.

The sights are fixed, its blued, the serial number has a "c" before it and it has a 6" barrel. I would say the condition is good. the finish has some wear but no visible scratches or anything like that. Its been passed down since my great grandfather so I wouldnt sell it. I actually found the origial receipt!
I appreciate all your help.0 -
SaxonPig:
1)If you had your choice of the following S&W M&P guns, which would be your pick, as the best gun to own:
a)A Pre-Model 10(4" barrel)in good condition(S/N D908XXX)priced at $200? There is a ring around the cylinder(Not real bad though)and, the bluing is very good, with the look of a little bit of aging around the cylinder)?
2)An S&W Model 10-5, in a little better condition than the above Pre-Model 10, also priced at $200? The bluing is near mint and there is barely a trace of a ring, around the cylinder(Even though the gun has been fired on occassion)?
3)Which of the above guns, would be of the best quality?
4)Is it very likely(Since the lock-up is tight(But with a little fore and aft, cylinder movement)that the older, Pre-Model 10, could still be a reliable gun to shoot("As-is")or,not? Give your reasons, one way, or the other?
OTHER OPINIONS PLEASE: I would like to hear opinions, from anyone else, regarding the above questions(As well as comments from owners of pre-model 10's and the model 10)?0 -
SaxonPig: Although the pre-model 10 is fairly nice, the model 10-5 is very nice(Except for a little "Fuzzy area of hairline scratches(Hardly noticeable-unless in the correct lighting). And, the older(Pre-model 10)does have a normal ring around the cylinder(Not real deep though)but there is just a "Trace" of a cylinder ring on the model 10-5.
I'm not real familiar about these S&W M&P's, however, I noticed that on the pre-model 10(But not on the model 10-5)that although, the "Lock-up" was tight, the cylinder had a little bit of fore and aft play(I don't know if this gun should be rejected, due to this-or?)? How much fore and aft cylinder play(If any?)should the older, pre-model 10 have(Any different, from the newer, model 10-5?)? What about on all of your M&P's SaxonPig, any fore-aft cylinder play(Any gun with noticeably, more play, than the others, in your stable?)?0 -
I made a mistake, in the original postings, of both the S&W pre-model 10-and, of the model 10-5, that I'm still pondering over(As to which of these to buy?)and following, is the correct S/N's for these two guns:
1)Pre-Model 10: The S/N is S830XXX.
2)The Model 10-5: The S/N is D908XXX.
I'm not certain, as to the exact years that these two guns were made(Or, if there is anything, significant about these particular, S/N's?)?0 -
SaxonPig:
Let me describe the condition, of the following guns, in a different way(Then, tell me which of these two guns, you would pick?):
1)The pre-model 10, is probably in 95% to 97% condition.
2)The model 10-5, is in 98.5% to 99% condition.
Would you still pick the older gun-or, instead, the newer gun?
Also, although, you just mentioned that every gun, must have some clearance, to function properly, you did not give me an idea, of approximately, how much fore and aft cylinder play, would still be acceptable(And nothing to worry about?)? You also, didn't say, whether or not your older, pre-model 10, had any more fore-aft, cylinder play, than your newer model 10-5 and model 10-7? Since I'm new, regarding these S&W M&P guns-I need a few more specific's(This will be a big help to me)especially, if you can elaborate, a little more?0 -
SaxonPig:
1)I apologize, for seeming to put pressure on you, about the pre-model 10 versus the model 10-5.
2)Yes, I realize, that I must be the person, to make the final decision, regarding which of the above guns to buy?
3)I like both guns-but, I'm old, like you-and, I tend to like old guns also! The problem is, I'm also a "Perfectionist" and I strive for "Perfection"! In this case, both of these guns are good(But, not entirely, "Flawless")! The model 10-5, is the better looking gun(And, has no fore-aft movement, in the cylinder)! The pre-model 10, would be satisfactory to me(But, being a "Greenhorn" about these S&W M&P's, made me want to find out(Hopefully, from an owner of these types of M&P's(Like yourself))especially, since you have both of these guns, in your collection, specifically, about whether or not, your older, pre-model 10, has any more fore-aft cylinder play, than your later model 10's? The reason, that I have been pushing so hard(To get an answer, regarding how much cylinder play, is normal, for these guns(Especially, the pre-model 10)is because, I need to get some informed, knowledge about this(Since I don't have this "Expert" knowledge)and, most importantly, I need to get this information, pretty fast-or, I risk, losing both of these guns, to another buyer? As I had mentioned before(Although I haven't measured it?)if I try to move the cylinder(Fore and aft)There is some noticeable play(On the pre-model 10)(And, I don't know whether the pre-model 10's normally had more cylinder play, than the newer model 10's-or, if not)? If I could get some idea, what is right and what is wrong, for the older gun-then, I'll be able to choose the right gun, I think(For me)? Anyway, this is why, I have been asking for some expert help? My intent, was not to "Offend" anyone-but, just to obtain the answers I needed(To enable me to make somewhat of an informed choice between these M&P's, in question?)! I did not mean to pick on you, SaxonPig(But, I felt that you had the knowledge, that would answer my questions, about these guns?)and I do appreciate the help, that you have already given me! I would also, be grateful, to anyone else, that might have specific information, to offer me, about my above questions, regarding the proper(Or, normal)cylinder play, for these two guns? This is the main thing, that I need to know-and, the only real thing that is keeping me from choosing one of these two guns? Thanks, to everyone in advance!0
