Underwood M1 Carbine Mfg date
Just recently got an Underwood M1 carbine, SN 6112XXX. Any idea when it was manufactured? The barrel is shot out and I am trying to locate a replacement with the correct dated Underwood barrel. Current barrel fails the bullet test miserably, the inserted bullet will go all the way to the case and spin freely.
Thanks in advance, Mike

Specific data on serial #s & dates of assembly are pretty much non-existent for M1 carbines. However, based on the high #, yours was probably made late in the war.
It's really difficult to "restore" an M1 carbine. I would just try to find a good USGI barrel from any of the manufacturers.

Here's a little help for you: Underwood-Elliot-Fisher #'s 6099689-6199688 Quantity 100,000 (in that serial # block) total produced by Underwood for the war was 545,600, 11/42-4/44. Good bet yours was made in 1944, since it's near the end of their production. Percent of rarity is 9.0%. 0
