45/90 loads---velocity????
I would like to know the approx speed of my loads. I do not have access to a cronograph and hope someone is useing loads like mine that has a crono. The first load is 8 grains of AA 5744 plus 65 grains of F blackpowder with a cast 405 grain bullet sized at 459. The second is ,again, 8 grains of 5744 with 60 grains of F blackpowder behind a 500 cast bullet. These loads are shot in a 28" barrel. They hold approx 1 1/2" at 100 yards. This is going to sound like a south forty experiment, LOL. If you had access to a 200 or 300 yard range and measured the bullet drop from a 100 yard zero, you could get a fairly accurate velocity "guess" Just consult a ballistic table that has that weight and approx. shape (re: B.C.) and cross referance the inches dropped at what range you shot at. Then see which velocity heading it's under. Be a lot easier to determine with a 45-90 than say a 22-250. Who knows, might even work. 0 -
out of a 29 1/2'BBL using REM 9 1/2 primers and a 385 cast bullet and 55 grains of varget you average about 1650 FPS.
we just scrounged up a full case of PMC .45-90 300 grain lead flat nose .458 diameter factory loaded precision target loads. we cannot wait to see the chronograph results on these babies. its got to be near 2000 fps.

If you are mixing Black powder with smokless YOU ARE INSANE! I know the practice, but very unwise.
GO TO ACCURATE ARMS WEB SITE for loads using XMP-5744 they have full data on the 45-90 loads.

I'm not an expert, mostly amateure, (amateures read alot) but the rule i've tried to remember is DO NOT MIX POWDERS. Not being an expert, can someone tell me where this recipe came from, If this is a common practice[?] 0 -

There are some bench rest guy's (porfessional shooters) that do this with very select smokeless powders.
But Black powder and smokeless don't mix. I could be all wet on the subject, but it seems I could get the same results from a Mag primer.

Gents; If you would check in the older Lyman Loading books and check loads from the modern black powder shooters you will find that the "duplex" loads are very popular. For those who don`t know what duplex loads are, it is a small charge of smokeless powder topped off with a charge of black powder. It has been used for many, many years. The old Schutzen shooters used it a lot at the turn of the century with very good results. The modern black powder cartridge shooters are still useing it with execellent results. The duplex load will burn clean, leaveing very little fowling in the barrel eleminating the need to clean every few shots.[:)][:D][:)] 0 -

Because Black powder is a pain for me to get, I have just been using strait AA-5744
I might have to try it. Use Filler wad or no?

Hello FrancF, No offense taken and no hard feelings. The general rule of thumb is to use approx 10% smokeless in relationship to the amount of black being used. I have a friend who shoots a 45-120 and uses 10 grains of AA5744 plus 100 grains of Fg black powder. The bullet is a 500 grain pointed cast bullet. He has very good results with that load. No filler is needed since the powder will be compressed approx 1/8". However, I would recommend useing a over powder wadd behind the bullet. Some of the fellows use FFg but, I have had much better groups with Fg and the cases just fall out of the chamber. That indicates there is not any excessive pressure in the loads. I think if you try a duplex load it will surprize you and you will be "hooked" on it.[:)][:)][:)] 0 -
What Loren (44mag) says is right on; I would suggest that the 10% smokeless be the maximum used. There are some shoots where duplexing is not allowed. I have not done a lot of duplexing, but it does seem to shoot cleaner, less fouling, etc. Emery
