I also would like to hear of a good Stevens reference book. I tend to pick up Favorites, Little Scouts, Crackshots, without a whole lot of knowledge about manufacture dates, model changes, and such.

I don't really know of a Stevens reference book. It woud be a good project for someone who had a lot of time; they'd need it as there were so many models and variations. Very often the same or similar Stevens models were also made under the Savage name and when you can't find information directly about a Stevens you'll find it under Savage. Your 940B was a fairly common and inexpensive gun, with the models being 940, D, DY, E, EY & Y. It was also produced as the Springfield 947, 947D & 947E. It was made in 12, 16, 20, 28 & .410 Gauges. Most parts are available from the Gun Parts Corp., and it is shown on page 804 of their current Catalog #25. In almost new condition it would be worth about $95.
