.455 Webley Rounds
[?] Is there a readily available common brass, such as .45 Long Colt, which can be cut down or re-sized to serve as .455 Webley brass for black powder loads? The British ammo load is prohibitively expensive if you can even find it. Getting slugs should not be difficult, but I need the brass and/or load info if anyone is familiar with tinkering up a SAFE substitute. Thanks.

There is a company called Buffalo Arms in Sandpoint Idaho that makes the .890 length case from .45 LC casings. They trim the front side of the rim to give a thickeness of .034. If you wanted to make your own by cutting off some .45 Long Colt cases, it is not a real hard thing to do. There was three different lengths of casing manufactured for the .455 Webley, depending on whether it was the Black Poweder MK I or the common .740 length case which was the common one used in WW II by the British. They used a "Hollow Bottom" 265 gr. Lead Round Nose bullet. You can load these cut down cases with Unique and use a 250 gr. .452 diameter round nose lead and have very satisfactory cartridges. The Three Casing Lengths were: (1) .890, (2) .820, and (3) .740 with the .740 able to be shot in any of the Webley/Colt Eley .455 chambered guns. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help further.

If you use the .890 length, (I found this the easiest to make), you can use 5.5 grins of Unique with a 250 gr. lead round nose and work you load up from there. I settled on a 6.0 grains of powder for my Colt, which seems to be about the limit. The 5.5 are nice to shoot and have good accuracy.
