Japanese 26
Can anyone tell me what size cartridge a Japanese 26 revolver takes. Gun says 9mm BUT a 9mm is too small and drops into cylinder.

It uses a 9mm Japanese[not Nambu]. This is a rimmed 9mm about the size of a 38S&W.Dont know where to get ammo, and don't know if another round can be safley fired in it.Hopefully someone will stop by with additional info-Bob

If you are dropping in a 9mm Parbellum round you are way off target! The Japanese Model 1893 revolver (often called the type 26) used its own special rimmed 9X22mm round which was never used again in any other pistol. This ammo is very hard to find is is quite collectable so where you'd ever find enough today for shooting purposes is anyones guess. The Type 26 revolver is strictly a collectors item and I see no good reason to ever shoot it.

www.ows-ammunition.com probably has it but be prepared to pay through the nose.

I shoot 9mmR Japanese through mine but whenever I run short, 38 Short COLT (not 38 S&W) (hard to find too) has always worked okay.
Personal experience not to be used for YOUR situation. Stick with factory loadings.

If 38 shorts fit, then the gun has been altered to allow for the thicker rim! The original cartridge was very close to 38 S&W and it is not difficult to rig up great ammo for it. Start with 38 S&W cases. Chuck the case in a lathe and turn off .004 from the FRONT of the rim. .360 bullets are ideal, but I have successfully used .358. Any load suitable for 38 sp is AOK; the revolver is quite strong, but I would not go to +P. It was designed for 200 gr bullets, and so lighter bullets will probably print a bit low at most pistol ranges.

king999, I appreciate the info BUT I would not suggest anyone try and Jerryrig any firearm with another cartridge. Chamber pressure ect. on these old pistols could cause injury to someone. 0 -

Nah, nothing altered. Have one first series and one that made it through rework. Both take the round just fine with no undue exertion. After firing, extraction is very easy, no swelling of the cases.
