Shotgun Question

I have a Hopkins & Allen lever action drop block single shot 12 ga.
ser.# 1417. This weapon has one single ring screw to remove the barrel.lower front of reciever block. Age? Value? good condition.

    I have a H&R Topper 88 12ga. in 3" full. I was wanting to know if I can shoot magnum turkey loads in this gun safely. Thanks for the help! earndawg

    Remington and a few other manufactures produce chokes for slugs (basically for sabot style) the choke tube extends passed the end of the barrel and if rifled for stabilizing the slug. The barrel can also be changed smooth bore and full rifled barrels are available.

    First, and most important... No harm will be done if you toss slugs through your present tube.

    Take a box or two of slugs and see what kind of accuracy you get. Perhaps try several brands as one might shoot better in your gun than others.

    If the pattern is acceptable, great! If not, then possibly a slug barrel.

    Bear in mind that the slugger will have iron sights. That makes a huge difference beyond 75 feet. Then again, you can mount a scope on the gun and go in that direction if the present tube tosses a reliable pattern.

    The guy at the store told me that I would run the risk of blowing off my barrel if i shot slugs through my gun as is. Also what is the difference between smooth bored barrels, full rifle, and the barrel I currently have?

    Your barrel is a smooth bore with a interchangable choke. You can buy a fixed choke barrel for slugs (smooth bore) or a barrel that has rifleing the full length of the barrel (like a rifle barrel)

    The guy in the store if full of SH-- (or from the turn of the century). The old round ball slugs of yesteryear could potentially be a problem in a full choke gun, but modern slugs will not damage a full choke gun. I would probably use an improved cylinder choke tube, but it is not necessary. You can also buy sights that clamp onto the rib of your barrel, and work like the sights on a slug barrel.

    THE GUY AT THE STORE IS FULL OF BEANS, ANY AMRICAN SLUG WILL FIT THROUGH ANY CHOKED BARREL SAFELY. ACCURACY IS ANOTHER THING, LIKE THE OTHER POSTERS SAID, TRY SEVERAL BRANDS OF AMMO AND SEE WHAT YOUR SHOTGUN LIKE. BY THE WAY IF YOUR SHOTGUN CAME WITH ONLY ONE CHOKE TUBE IT PROBABLY IS MODIFIED CKOKE.

    The Barrel you have has a "Sleeve" screwed into the end of the Barrel with a slightly smaller Dia. than your barrel forming a "Choke". As long as this restricted hole is larger than the slug you are shooting, no harm. A clay pidgeon barrel (Skeet?) has very little restriction(choke) which should be OK.

    Old timers used to check choke by dopping a Dime down the Breach End Of the Barrel. If the dime goes thru(out the muzzel end) the barrel is NOT Full choke and slugs are OK.

    Smooth Bore means NO restriction or choke.

    Forgot to mention, the Dime test ONLY works on 12ga barrels (.728 - .740 dia.)

    If you are worried you could buy a "cylinder" choke which has no constriction, but will protect the threads. If you use a saboted slug, the plastic has quite enough give to pass through even a full choke.

    Ken, you've received good advice. My first deer was taken with an improved cylinder choked barrel and a slug. No chokes, no rifled barrels, no extra money to dealers for extra parts. Try it, if it's accurate enough, use it. The gun will have no problem with it.
