FMJ for Northern Whitetails

This will probably sound like a real inexpierenced question, and that's because I am. Anyway I have the 203 grain fmj bullets for my 7.62 x 54r, but I am seeing in the message forum that I shouldn't or just cannot use them for whitetails. Are they illigal to use in Northern Michigan, or do you guys just not reccomend them because of not making a good size exit wound? Like I said it may sound like a dumb question. Sorry.

As always though I really appreciate your input.

    It would be okay if you could put it through both shoulders and bust them real good. Other than that, it will just go straight on through without a good entrance or exit wound. I would never use a fMJ bullet unless I was hunting Dangerous Game in Africa and then only the real big stuff like Buffalo and Elephant.

    MOST STATES PROHIBIT THE USE OF FMJ FOR HUNTING, GET ANY SOFT POINT AMMO FOR WHITETAILS. DO NOT TRY TO 'MAKE YOUR OUN' OUT OF FMJ BULLETS.

    Your big game regulations should spell out what bullets and calibers can be used, and you can check on-line in all likely hood. FMJ's simply do not open well and the bullet passes through with minimal (compared to soft point or HP bullets). FMJ's are illegal in many states, maybe most, and some states require a cartridge over a certain caliber, like .24, while others say simply "centerfire rifles."

    There is no restriction here in Michigan as to the type of bullet, but I would use a soft point or hp in that round

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but the concern is both that the FMJ will pass right through the animal, only wounding it seriously. Also, the bullet could also still have alot of velocity and travel further downrange causing danger to other animals, or hunters.

    Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.

    You are correct lead, but since a safe hunter always knows what is behind his target, this should not be a problem.[}:)]

    As it was stated, you should check your state game laws before going wild with any FMJ bullets. The soft lead or hollow points were meant to expand and use their energy to stop the game by causing shock to the flesh and vital parts.
