remington 722 bolt question

I have a remington 722 in 244 rem, will a 700 bolt fit?

    I have a 722 .222 that is missing the bolt years ago i had it all ready to send to remington to get a bolt fitted and never did. now i've been told that they have no gunsmithing service and no parts are availble I've been lookng for a used bolt with no luck can anyone here give me any advice. is a model 721 742 or 788 the same bolt?

    The 722 is a short-action rifle whereas the 721 is a long-action. The bolts won't interchange, but they might interchange between a 722 and a 700 short-action rifle. I would consult a gunsmith that deals with Remingtons a lot. Numrich has a listing for the 222 bolt but they are currently sold out. You might also try the gunshows, sometimes you find someone selling old Remington parts. Don't give up, I got two 721's and they are worth the work[:D]

    The 700 bolt in .17 Rem looks to be almost EXACTLY like the bolt in the 722 in .222. Same measurements, same positions of lugs, sear, everything. The bolt shroud is shaped a little different, but that doesn't seem to matter.
    The .17 bolt fits in the .222, but not vice-versa. Looks like it would with a little persuasion.

    Life is too short to own junk guns[8D], but I actually inherited this one from my dad when he passed on to the great hunting grounds in the sky in May of 1999... I sure do miss him[:(]

    700 bolts have a guide slot cut in the right side lug and is therefore wider than the 722 bolt, but they can be adapted by a GUNSMITH, (not a gun mechanic) the barrel may also have to be either reamed or turned in to assure proper headspacing.

    I don't see any difference in the width of the right lug. They both measure the same.
    If you can find a 700 short action bolt in .17, .222 or .223 you should grab it,- if it's reasonable of course.
    It's not too difficult to mill that groove in the lug.
    Don't choose a gunsmith to do the work just because he calls himself a GUNSMITH. Some of them only install butt plates, sling swivel studs, finish wood stocks, etc. and cobble up any metal work they do. His title has little to do with his ability to do excellent gunsmithing.
    Any bolt you find will require that the barrel be set to the proper headspace.
