Barrel length for .22lr
Most rifles have a maximium "effective" barrel length in which the most velocity is going to be gained. Ya know, like on high-power rifles and pistols they say 30-100 fps per inch... Does anyone know what is normal for the .22lr? I assume it changes by the ammo some too.

AN OLD SHOOTING MAGAZINE DID A TEST ON THIS (I DON'T REMEMBER WHICH MAG.) BY CUTTING AND CROWNING A .22 BARREL IN 1" SECTIONS. BEST VELOCITY WAS AT 16/18" DEPENDING ON THE KIND OF AMMO. ANYTHING OVER THIS AND THE BULLET ACTUALY SLOWED DOWN. 0 -
Yes......BUT....while maximum velocity is obtained in the first 16-18 inches, best accuracy is usually in the 22-26 inch length. 0 -

I will add this to your comment... Winchester made a nearly 30,000 single-shot Winder Muskets with 28" barrels, and more than half of them were chambered for 22 Short... these were extremely accurate firearms. Winchester also made a good number of Model 1885 Schuetzen Single-shot target rifles that had 30" octagon barrels on them. I own a Model 1885 Plain Sporting Rifle that has a special order 30" No. 3 octagon barrel on it in 22 Long Rifle, and it will shoot a single ragged hole at 50 yards.
Winchester's most famous 22 Rifle, the Model 1890 slide action, was made with a 24-inch octagon barrel, and it was the finest such rifle ever built.

if i remember correctly, the max effectiveness of a bbl is determined by the bullet and powder. i believe the length of a bbl is designed to house the gases until the last grain of powder is burnt, at which point the bullet leaves the bbl. any powder still burning after the bullet leave the bbl is lost powder and worthless. thus, its easy to conclude that longer is better than shorter, but actual data on each bullet is required to determine proper length for a bbl. for instance, if the bbl is too long, the bullet can stop forward motion and lodge, blowing gases backwards,(backfire) or even worse, buldge and split a bbl. it is critical science to get the bullet to leave as the powder stops burning. this is why companies like 'the old winchester co' had so many different guns and length bbls to choose from. they flooded the market with so many different options for so many different type bullets for so many different needs of the shooter. ask any bp shooter about the tarp in front of his muzzleloader and he'll know what im talking about. hope i helped.

This presumes using iron sights. If a scope is used there is no difference.

He Dog, I don't mean to discredit you, but how the heck does open sights and scopes come in to play when bbl length in being discussed concerning bullet velocity and accuracy? 0 -
I think he might have meant because on short barrels the sight radius is shorter and makes them inherently less accurate. I hadn't actually thought about the extra barrel length (past maximium velocity) stabilizing the bullet.
I was just curious, I see a lot of aftermarket barrels for the 10/22 that are 16" long, some 18", and even a couple for 21". Just curious about the best length.0 -
Anyone out there tried the WalMart special Ruger 10/22 with the 22" bbl? I had a post on here about it a few days ago but nobody actually said they had one, and only a few mentioned seeing it. It really is a good looking gun, and did I mention the bbl is stainless? Might just have to put it on the Christmas list! 0 -
i think length increases accuracy based on the ability to give the bullet a couple more twists before it leaves. some will argue that the shorter a bbl, the less chance for someone to flinch and misalign a sight picture. follow me? the sooner it gets away from a jittery set of arms the better chance/faster it has to be 'in flight' enroute to target without the moving gun effecting the launch. everyone with me?

The type of ammo and rifling will have a big affect on the effective length as well. Rifling that grips the bullet well and evenly (like polygonal rifling) allows the bullet to achieve gyroscopic stability in a shorter barrel. 22's tend to get highest velocity in a 18" barrel, however, some of the newer hi-velocity loads like the Stinger use a slower burning powder and supposedly reach highest velocity in a 20-21" barrel.
