Mossberg 500A Question - Please Help!

Hello There! I am new to the world of guns and I have a question concerning a Mossberg 500A shotgun a recently purchased. When I took my firearms course to get my licence we practiced on all loading types of long arms. The pump action shot guns we practiced on had a spring loaded door you had to push the shell through to load the gun. I have seen this on all shotguns I have ever seen. The Mossberg 500A I purchased does not have one. I was told by the gun shop that this is the way this model is designed. The loading port is an open slot with a silver "T" shaped piece exposed on the bottom of the gun. I would like any 500A owners to e-mail me and and let me know if this is true.     You described the way my Mossberg looks, some shotguns don't have the door. I don't have one on my Ithaca model 37, but there is one on my Remington model 870 and on my Winchester model 12.

    The silver thingie is the shell lifter. Shove the pump part forward(away from you, aiming the gun), and the lifter will get out of the way of the shell-loading-hole, then add shells one at a time, brass part to the back/buttstock, plastic first, into the loading hole, until it won't easily take any more. If it only takes 3; you have a short wooden dowel in the magazine(shell-holding)tube. If you want it to hold more; you have to make sure it's unloaded by jacking the pump part back & forth vigorously until no more shells come out, and you don't see a shell in the loading hole anymore.
    Now jack the pump part back about 2", and unscrew the ring at the end of the magazine tube. slide the barrel forward till it clears the receiver and fish that dowel out of there(the tube, not the barrel).
    reassemble by putting the barrel back on and tightening the ring again. Jack the pump forward all the way, and if the bolt goes all the way forward, tighten the ring a little more if you can. All loosening and tightening should be done by hand, no tools!
