Newbie remington question!
While at a auction sale in the fall, I purchased a Remington barrel in .17 rem. for the whooping price of $10.00[:D] I recently found a Remington 788 chambered in 222 which needs to be re-barrelled since it is a short action this 17 barrel should work right? or would athe barrels be model specific? ie diffrent thread pitch and such. Sorry for the stupid question![:)]

a 'smith could fit the 700 barrel to a 788 but would have to recut the threads (possibly shorten the barrel) and rechamber. a lot of $ to try out a $10 barrel. 0 -

Since you seem to have the 'luck' gene I always coveted, you might want to poke around for a better/new barrel for the 788. The 788 and especially in .222 has become somewhat of a pretty desirable rifle. They were a made for price gun at the time (I remeber that they were $100 or less in the late '60's). But they also made many a model 70 or 700 devotee weep because they generally shot with or outshot the
higher priced guns. Look here first or on 'flea bay' as a lot of guys changed to the .22-250, ect. at the time because of trends, range talk, ect. There might be that hardly used/new factory barrel leaning up somewhere.
You still got one heck of a deal on the .17 barrel and any number of people might want to snag that at a much higher value. Or see of the threads are for a Mauser, ect.0
