Sight screw hole in fireing chamber

    I've had this on several old shotguns, and I think even a couple small-bore rifles (.22 is all I can think of). All I know is that I never had a problem with them, just make sure the screw doesn't get in to far and interfere with the chamber itself. I wouldn't want this scenario in a big belted magnum however...

    You should'nt have any problem...But if you're going to shoot it without the Scope Mounted, I'd put SCREWS mack in the Holes and Loctite them...Make sure the Screws don't protrude into the Chamber and cut the Case or Base of the Shell..........Take it to a Good Gunsmith and let Him do it for You....Might cost you Ten Bucks.....but give You a Million Dollars worth of Peace of Mind....

    its obvious whoever did it isnt dead and the gun hasnt blown up by now, but they may have gotten rid of it based on the holes! if it was a 22 i'd agree with everyone that posted, but because its 410, im gonna have to say be careful and lean towards caution. the danger of having the hole is that unlike a 22 brass case, the plastic case of a 410 can get shaved as its fed into battery ripping the plastic 'hull'. you wont know until its fired. any hull that is ripped below the crimp and forward the hull base, can cause dangerous gas leaks behind the wad where pressure is built, that could rupture prematurely behind the crimp, splitting the plastic case and causing a gas tight failure to occur too soon. the gas could come out the split and right up the hole and 'boom.' forget the mount and scope and boss the holes. this may be the very wisest thing to do. but, if there is any piece of the screw hanging low, or if there is any ridge or burr in the chamber, beware.

    I'm with BOBSKI regarding the 410. However I would not be concerned re open screw holes in the chamber of a rifle. The Japanese did it deliberately on their Arisaka rifles. It actually would function like a safety valve in case of excess chamber pressure. Incidentally, I have never heard of an Arisaka that failed due to excess pressure.

    we all know that the reason casings are made of brass is so that when the pressures after igition increase, the casing expands and creates a super seal against the chamber walls to ensure all gases go out the bore pushing the bullet. thus the importants of necking and seating a bullet precisely. so, picture a casing expanding with nothing to push against in the area of the tap hole. it could cause a brass pimple to form where the pressure was just pushing against the void. this could be the reason many with this kind of mod. get scratches down the casing when ejected. for some reason, i dont like the idea of 40,000 psi pushing against nothing! is it me? now i understand that much experimentation has been done on relieving chamber pressure in 22 shorts for olympic rapid fire. ive seen the high standard experimentals and have duplicated the experiments on my own guns. but all the ones ive seen are directly in front or right over the bullet, not in the casing area. and for the same reason...the brass must expand against something. and a very important factor must be pointed out in these type of experimentations.....the guns are 22 semi auto where the casing is being tossed backwards.....not being kept in battery. locking a bullet into a chamber with a bolt and forcing pressure to go one way is a lot different than having some of it go backwards. follow me? so...once again, i stand by the bossing of the holes...or donating it to a gunsmith school and to be used in a 'dont do this' display.

    Hey Morty- I think you'll find the gas relief cut on Arisakas,Mausers and mod.70's are in the receiver proper,almost at the forward end of the bolt travel, and not the chamber-That'd be really scarey for a rifle round.I don't even like it in a 410!!Bob

    Didn't want to close the thread so I thought I'd try an edit.

    Morty- Been collecting for 40 plus years as well.I had double checked before posting. On my 99 the saftey hole is on the top of the receiver, behind the mum. It does not enter the chamber. It is located to a point on the bolt where the ejector slot and the extractor groove intersect. There is a corresponding pin hole in the bolt body for escaping gases.I have never heard of a chamber being purposely drilled,but then I have no special knowledge on Arisakas in particular-interesting.     Hangfire: I've been collecting and shooting the Arisakas for 40 years. I'm referring to the two holes in the T-38 (and relatives) and the one hole on the 99 (and relatives). These holes are on the top, directly above the chamber. Put a probe thru the hole and you can tell that it is open to the chamber.

    sorry king999 the hole you mentioned are in the receiver, not the chamber. they vent the hot gases if a shell ruptures.

    Put a couple of screws into the holes and you will be fine. We all have a variation on this system anyway. It's called a breech and we plug it with a bolt.
