    (1) Yes, they can be blued--usually (depending on the alloy of stainless. Some blue better than others, and it's hard to get an exact match to a carbon steel receiver). (2) There are relatively few gunsmiths that do this work (because it requires a separate set-up and there is relatively little call for it). (3) Good alternatives are teflon coating or baked-on paint finishes. (4) Most folks that have a stainless barrel installed like the stainless look and live with them the way they are.

    Brownells sells Oxynate No. 84. They say it works on stainless and cast iron.

    You can also check with companies like Robar or ARS about their metal finishes. I know Robar has a chromium sulfate process for "blacking" stainless items.
