OLD Springfield barreled action---

I recently acquired an OLD 1903 Springfield barreled action in supernice shape. It has been drilled and tapped for a reciever sight, so restoring it to original military is not an option.
The serial number is in the mid-33,000 range, possibly the first year of production.
Now, I am quite aware that this action should not be fed any modern .30-06 ammo, but have been considering rebarreling it to a lesser cartridge, say the .257 Roberts.
I would like to hear any feedback on this idea---

    I believe I'd leave it as is until it can be varified that the Gun was Drilled for a Scope or differant Sights by the Factory or not....Springfield was experimenting with Optics and a few differant Sight's on the early 1903's...Be a real shame to run Off Half Cocked just to Learn that You have/had a Real Collector Piece....

    You would still be dealing with a cartridge in the 50,000 PSI range. This is what you are trying to avoid. As Cap'n Kirk says, it would be best to leave it as is and try to find a collector who would value it in the present state.

    Just been checking out Rich Lee's "Modern Reloading" First Edition. He list loads for the 257 Roberts, ranging between 42,000 and 47,000 CUP's.
    Don't know about you, but thats way more pressure I would want to subject a first year production Springfield action to. Specially with my head laying down there behind the bolt.

    Maybe not .257, but I suspect there are cartridges with low enough pressures. But they would require significant reaming and or cutting.
