HOWA Rifles?- I Need an Expert Opinion
I wanted to solicit the opinion of those of you familiar with Howa rifles and barreled actions. It appears that the used "NIB" after market prices are well below dealer "NIB" prices; $100 to $200 lower.
I don't see any sense in buying a new Howa from a dealer if used prices for "NIB" are so much lower. Is this due to a real or perceived problem with the quality of Howa, or some other reason?
Would you personally buy a "NIB" Howa 300 Mag for $275?
My point being, I purchased a Rem 700 ADL (308) in 1983 for $85, now valued over $250, a Rem 788 7mm-08 for $125, now valued at over $300, several M77s for low $100s, all worth well over $300, etc. What's the value problem with Howa's resale?

The Howa's are fine rifles with some really nice design features and good accuracy out of the box. Evaluation, however, is about demand and the Remingtons and other names have a perceived value higher than less known names. That may be for good reason, they have been around a long time and service what they sell, but they are not necessarily better. If you are looking for an investment, Howa is not the rifle for you. If you want a nice hunting rifle then it is a good buy.
I personally bought a Howa barreled action for $275 about 2 years ago.

I have four Howa's. 30.06, 300 Win. Mag, 25.06, and 22-250. Howa and Savage are the best out of the box guns I've ever owned, regardless of their lower price. I'll buy another one in a minute. Great guns!
They are the folks who build the Weatherby Vangard. Does that tell you anything about their quality? Like HeDog said, they are a user gun, not a collecting gun.

A Friend of mine bought a Howa about 12 years ago and it is a SHOOTER, great rifle, One of the best buy's out their. 0 -
I have rebarreled 2 of these to date. Excellent buy for the money, HOWEVER, every thread on these things is Metric. 0 -

I was a sniper in Vietnam. When I got home after some years I bought a Remington 700 Sendero heavy barrel in 308 (7.62X51 NATO) and could shoot one hole groups with it at 1, 2, and 300 yards. I then got hold of a Remington 788 in 308 and it would shoot as good as the Sendero. So I got rid of the $800 Sendero and kept the $225 788. Then I bought a Howa Model-1500 heavy barrel and it would out shoot the 788. So I sold the 788 and still have the Howa Model-1500 heavy barrel which I hunt and long range target shoot with to date.
Personaly I think for a reliable and accurate long range rifle that is not too expensive, you can't beat the Howa!!!!
